What makes this broadband speed test different?

The bandwidth test is provided by Blacknight on their servers in Dublin.
The network is peered with the Irish Internet Neutral Exchange (INEX), in Data Electronics.
Most of the other bandwidth tests you may find are based outside Ireland, so their results are not as accurate for Irish users.

Do I have to register?

No. But in order to offer you more advanced features we now require registration.

What does the free membership entitle me to?

Free membership gives you to the ability to:

Which browsers are supported?

Any browser with Java support. We recommend that you use Firefox

Which operating systems are supported?

Any operating system with Java support.

The test is very simple, but you must have Java to use it.

What is the Quality of Service percentage?

It is the ratio of the slowest download rate to the highest download rate, as seen during a single speed test.

What is "Upload burst"?

If the test detects that your cable modem system supports an 'upload burst', that upload burst number will be displayed. Some cable modem systems allow small data transfers (like 8K or less) to operate faster than the rated speed of your cable connection, and only cap the data transfer to the rated speed after a very short period of time (300ms or so) of constant use of the data channel. Please note that this burst mode is usually only available to you when there is extra (unused) capacity in the cable system.

Why do I get different results at different times?

Under ideal network conditions, the test will provide virtually identical results every time that it is run (verified in lab conditions). And that accuracy is only possible because the speed test times data transfers down the millisecond (1/1000 second), while most other speed testers can only time data transfers accurate to 1/100 of a second (10's of milliseconds). So the speed test is very precise.

However, in most environments, you will find that you are sharing the network, your Internet connection, and the server you are connecting to, with other Internet users. So unless you are the only person using the network and the server, you can and should expect a little variation in the results.

If you see wildly different results each time the speed test is run, that strongly suggests that you are sharing your network and/or server with too many other Internet users. In other words, the contention ratio is working against you.

If you are using a wireless network (not to be confused with a wireless ISP) the results may vary.
