Ipods support very few music formats, so naturally I tend to avoid it all costs.
Off the top of my head, benefits over Ipod from almost any other portable file player:
1) Music formats
2) Not locked into the ludicrous ITunes rules
3) Support for direct copy of any file without the need for anything other than MediaPlayer10. You can then use Windows explorer, or any other file browser to connect to the player.

My suggestion, get a Creative Zen, Sony MP3 or iRiver player. They are around the same price, offer much wider music options; AND support the common licenced WMV format that most of the online shops use nowadays (iTunes do not support this).
