speed test 1.683 kbps download fair enough its not 2 meg but not a mile off.
its the same with most other providers worse in irish bb ripwave is more like rip off . but i realise you get what you pay for look around you will see. |
I was previously with NTL and got a 6 meg line, which was indeed a 6 meg line. No problem what so ever. Even Skype worked great. Unfortunately I just moved to an area where NTL can't provide Internet. The only ISP I have heard of so far having issues with Skype is Clearwire.
The main reason I see why Skype is having great problems on Clearwire network is that the upload speed is way too low and unreliable. I know there are other products out there, but the main reason for using Skype is that it is translated into loads of languages and all my friends and family are around Europe. So they can have Skype in their native language, which is handy.
I do not like the idea that some ISP tells me which product to use. Just provide me with a real Internet line (which I pay for)and I will use whatever I feel like using. It works very well on the continent, so I see no reason why it shouldn't work here.
I am having a 2 meg line with Clearwire but I have never been close to that speed. I got 4 lights out of 5 so I am in good sight of the cell. My average speed is a little less than 1 meg when I test outside of peak hours. When testing during peak hours I have something like an ISDN line.
I have been spoiled with Internet on the continent for the last 10 years and there you can get some serious Internet connections and I just wonder why it seems to be so bad here in Ireland. Not just Clearwire, but most ISPs are performing badly.
And while we are here, why not also speak about watching TV over your Internet line. Previously I was watching news from around Europe, because the news in Ireland is more or less just a report from Garda about crime instead of whats really going on. So watching news from other sources is simply impossible because of the lack of speed. I used to have a subscribtion with Eurosport to watch Tour de France and winter Olympics (because they don't get any TV time here), but I can kiss that goodbye until I find myself another ISP.
So my conclusion is, that Clearwire can provide Internet for primitive Internet usage (web, blog and e-mail), but if you want to use Internet something more sophisticated (VoIP, TV, Video, Radio) just forget about it.
