I am with Clearwire and have been consistently achieving a lot less than the promised 2mb download speed I am paying for. So I complained, by phone, a few times! I finally sent an email last Sunday and from Monday on my speed seemed to improve but is now on the wane again. The speed is fine for my PC but I use my Xbox 360 alot and find it's hard to get a game with a strong signal alot of the time so I have to make a choice on what I play on signal strength, not gaming preference. When I emailed Clearwire I told them that I always have the 5 lights illuminated so signal should be good. This is the reply they sent me -
From looking at your modem stats it seems that whilst the signal you are getting is very strong, it is getting quite a large amount of interference, otherwise known as signal noise. This will effect the download speeds you are able to achieve on your connection and until you can reduce this interference or totally manage to remove it, you will not receive an optimal level of service.
There are many things that can cause interference on wireless networks, but some of the more common include argon windows, lots of tall trees in the area, radio transmitting devices, being in a basement apartment/flat, and lots of high rise buildings that are preventing a clear signal from getting through to a Clearwire mast.
In this case the best workaround our customers can take is to try and move their modem around their place of residence to an area that is not as liable to pick up signal interference. It is best to do this by disconnecting your Clearwire modem from your PC/Laptop and with it plugged into the mains try and move the modem around your place of residence to an area where the signal and speeds seem to be better. Near windows and away from items listed above will give you a much stronger chance of a good service.
Unfortunately the lights on our clearwire modem do not show interference up and just the signal strength, so you will have to try and obtain a faster speed by trial and error as the lights will not be a great guide in this instance.
Is this a standard brush off (I'm not hugely technically minded)? I'm looking at
IBB and their 3mb download/upload offer. Would I be better off going with them, especially for gaming?
Any Ideas? I'm starting to get really frustrated by the whole thing. And sorry this post is so long...
