Well if you are using it for mobile broadband then it should be ok with or without the aerial.
I have broadband at home and only use the three card when i am on the road so I dont mind the speed etc.
You will get coverage using just the card or the usb thing but it is a radio device and if you use it inside a metal box (a car) then your signal will be lower also if you use it inside your home then the signal will be lower.

You should check the coverage of each card that is available
O2, Vodafone and Three
If you are in Galway city then all should be ok but if you are in an outlying area then you may need to get an aerial
The aerial i got was free from the Three guy and I use it on the card - stick the aerial outside the car/van/camper and use the router for local wireless..
