Thumbs down Broadband in Kenmare

I am in Kenmare, Co'Kerry and am having real problems with UTV broadband, I have been on a 2 MB package which has been getting progressively slower recently in fact having done several tests it run's as slow as 22.6kbps at times. I have been in contact with UTV & they are now telling me that after doing a line test Eircom tell them the line's are no longer able to cope with speed's of 2 MB and have downgraded my package to 1 MB.
They also tell me that all the suppliers use the same Eircom lines so I won't get any better with anyone else !

So if this is the case should anyone in Kenmare be paying for anything larger than a 1 MB connection ?

The problem I have now is what to do for broadband. Could anyone in Kenmare tell me what suppler they are with & if they are satisfied with the speed they get ?

I have also considered Vodafone broadband but hear it can vary greatly depending what area you are in. Has anyone any experience with this system in Kenmare ?

At the moment I am having to restrain myself in the language I use to convey my feeling's on this matter so any reply's, comment's or help anyone can give would be very much appreciated.

Cheer's, Thoroughly fed up from Kenmare, Riggwelter.

Default Broadband rubbish in Kenmare

I have the same problem as you. I also live in the Kenmare area and I am paying for a 2Mb package. I am subscribing through Eircom. I have had their technicians examine the problem twice. The first time they said that the exchange in Kenmare was being upgraded in Aug of this year. I doubt this has happened because the service is just as bad. They are currently examining it again and I am waiting a reply. I don't hold out much hope though. They have not offered to downgrade me to a cheaper package. This I will keep in mind...

Default Vmobile

I also tried the Vmobile 3G modem and found it to be very slow. While I had it I got a few friends to try it from their homes and they had the same verdict.

Thumbs down Still ripped off in Kenmare

Hi JK, Thanks for your reply, it would appear we are not the only ones to be suffering from this, despite complaints our service providers are continueing to sell packages they are unable to supply I myself have downgraded as I cannot see the point of paying for something I'm not getting but that said the service is still very bad.

Take a look at : Broadband in Kenmare ??? - boards.ie

The only thing I can think of is to mention this problem to everyone you know who is on broadband and spread the word on how we are being ripped off in Kenmare.

If you find a provider who does deliver please let us know.

Kenmares problem is contention as pointed out on boards.ie, Kenmare is fed by Microwave Radiation link and does not have a Fibre-optic connection although fibre runs from the exchange to a few businesses down the square. There is simply not enough spectrum available on the link to Kilgarvan (Inchee) where it is beamed on through the national Microwave relay grid. And Eircom have now sold this piece of Infrastructure.

Eircom are throttling the customers of the other providers and keeping the lions share of the bandwidth for themselves. I suspect that you have a few leaches in Kenmare who are constantly using Bittorrent etc. which is gobbling up all the bandwidth in the area. As for Wireless I am sure this is also a non-runner as it would only be re-distributed ADSL which cannot be good when ADSL is slow to begin with. The Internet cafes are getting a harsh doing also from the Broadband drought.

There is no solution to it only for Eircom to upgrade the link which they now don't own and the new owners will only milk it dry and then reflog it on with garbage bond debt.

Kenmare is a perfect example of all the positives and negatives of Broadband in Ireland, Eircom have a private monopoly in the area and are the only real-provider the other only piggyback on eircom, and Broadband has become really popular in Kenmare thus the network is creaking under the pressure, this shows how popular and excellent demand and take-up/usage there these are positive. The negative is Eircom's negative attitude where they will not upgrade anything and only are interested in raping your wallet. Kenmare may get some sort of Kerry Co. Council Wireless Area Network in 2008 but I wouldn't hold my breath with Healy-Rae's dictating the Council and gormless wanting every cent to save the planet

Default Broadband in Kenmare

Guys,
I dont want to be seen as advertising here but we are currently looking for high sites in and around Kenmare. We can currently provide a maximum of 4Mb up and down if required. We did it in Dingle, Lispole, Annascaul, Valentia and can do it again in Kilgarvan,Kenmare area. All the areas that Eircom said it was not economical to upgrade exchanges, we went ahead and did it. If anyone knows of suitable high sites in the Kenmare area then we would be glad to work with them to offer an alternative to Eircom. We have the link around the Ring of Kerry 70% completed. We do not resell ADSL. We have built our backhaul from Tralee directly to the Cork MAN so we are totally independent of Eircom.

Regards

Businesses in Kenmare may have to leave because of substandard Broadband

Businesses in Kenmare say they may be forced to move from the town because of the inefficient broadband service. Some say the current broadband service is as slow as dial up internet access was in the mid 1990's. A speed test recently carried out by Eircom showed the speed of the broadband is only a fraction of what it should be.

Joseph Smyth has a website development and promotion business in Kenmare
called Aonach. He says while broadband worked well when it first came to Kenmare, with more and more connections it has become much slower. While Michael Hayes, managing director or RVR Ltd, a heating suppliers company in Kenmare, says he may have to relocate his business because of the problems they're currently facing with the broadband service.

Ballyhar Cllr Brendan Cronin tabled a question about broadband service at a recent Kerry County Council meeting. The council says wireless local access solutions are currently being investigated for Kenmare, as well as for Dingle and Castleisland.
Once again Eircom shows another excellent example of the arrogant type of company it is. Kenmare will be in big trouble if it were to lose anyone of the above listed businesses especially the RVR. I wonder what ComWreck *cough* Comreg would have to say other than "you know we don't actually regulate broadband".

Once again Ireland's 3rd world broadband infrastructure bites us in the behind. However if there was to be a carbon neutral, eco-friendly lower emissions or anything to do with saving the planet, mountains would be moved by those hapless Greens and that moronic Eamonn Ryan. Cue the announcement later on.... "Kenmare was better of without those carbon emitting businesses, now we can all eat grass and live off the dole while watching our carbon footprint"

To be honest I don't blame Eircom for acting like this when they know there is such terrible regulation and absolutely no enforcement, they can basically do what they want. ComReg is to blame.
:/ Cue controversy...
