I reasonably happy with my chorus connection at the moment. I dont trust it 100% yet though. Too many incidents in the past. But theyve been going well for a while.
Are they called chorus now or cablenet?

Unhappy

I switched to Chorus last Friday - after only four days I'm fed up, supposed to have 3mb speed but tests show average of about 400kb download, everything's slow and it went off altogether twice for hours. Phoned and emailed but keep getting brushed off with "oh yes there's a problem in the Kilkenny area", no ideas as to when it'll get better - not a good intro to the service. Eircom was great, was with them 2 years and only changed cos it's cheaper, now I hear that eircom prices are going down so I wish I'd stayed.

I just changed to chorus 6mb. I previously had eircom home pro which, in fairness to them, i never had a problem with but they want a lot of money for 3mb down. this is my score on eircom:
13/09/2006 211 3069 kbps (375 KB/s) 494 kbps (61 KB/s) 50 % 100 ms 135 ms
and this is the score on chorus:
13/09/2006 23:45 4362 kbps (533 KB/s) 493 kbps (61 KB/s) 78 % 81 ms 52 ms
i think the chorus score is better overall, though i really know very little about it. i was surprised about the upload rate because i thought that cable is symetrical but you live and learn
i'm based in cork and the deal from chorus is 39.99 for 6mb, first three months free versus 54.99 for 3mb from eircom (though eircom only charged me something like 33 euros for the first two years for the line because they never change my billing information )

your numbers look a little off there lol, how were you getting 61kb upload on eircom,

Anyways, i got the 6mb CHorus too, and the upload rate is fine, however there is high jitter and latency on the upload channel making gaming and VoIP impossible.
Upload speed is fine though.
Download speed stays abouit 700 to 800 kBps most of the time though, pretty much all day really.

Oh and the routing is pants too, no inex/ireland peering, only LINX (London ) and Amsterdam peerage, with numerous hops

I'm moving to naas in a couple of weeks and i'm thinking of going with chrous.

I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

1. is the 6mb line availible in Naas?
2. If so what kind of download speeds can I expect?
3. Is the service any use for gaming?
4. Can you use bittorrent?

Angry Chorus sucks

This is getting worse and worse; complained officially to Chorus and got a call saying they're having problems nationwide, trying to sort it out etc; but it's just not good enough, they advertise and promise good connection and then we get left with this. I told a friend who was due to have it installed, and he cancelled installation the next day. So they're losing customers and reputation, why aren't they sorting it? You shouldn't promise what you can't deliver, cowboys. Speed tests this morning, download 61kbps and 12 kbps! - upload 372 and 355. On a 3mb service, huh.

its nationwide alright, both the chorus and NTL networks are having the same issues, ( Both owned and joined to the UPC/chello network ).

NTL because they reduced available bandwidth when switching from NTL:UK to the CHello network, and with Chorus probably cause they have now oversubscribed since bringing in the 3 month free offer. The entire system seems to be creaking

i dunno, you tell me. the chorus set up on one computer and the eircom on another, those are the results i got. the chorus connection was a little bit up and down for the first week but it settled after a while.i did a five way conference call on sunday with no problems, three people in ireland and one in vancouver. i have to admit there's a problem with using P2P with my brother in dublin (he's using eircom) but that might be his problem. i don't have a problem with file sharing with my other brother in canada. jNive if you have any advice about this i would appreciate it.

just got chorus installed today in cork, 3mb, seems ok, speed hasn't gone over 1 mb yet down as low as .5mb, pings for gaming seem better than ibb (wouldn't be hard) i still have a ibb conection in my parents house. so can compaire the 2. don't see much point in getting 6mb if there is this much contention tho.

I live on the south side and was thinking getting Chorus as I am having with Bt. Cannot be sure when I have service with them. Download speed is all over the place. Some times cannot even get through. So I was interested in your comments. Look forward to seeing how the service iimproves with Chorus

Angry Chorus still sucks

I am SO SORRY I ever changed to chorus.... banging head on keyboard in frustration. Even when the speed is up - occasionally I got about 2700kb, wow - there is still a frustrating delay in loading pages which never happened with the ADSL modem. Can't understand it. But the speed is generally low in any case, just now tested at 302Kb download which means image search pages, my main reference, take ages to load each time. Keep emailing them and getting palmed off with excuses.

Default Re Chorus TV

Yee could all use Linux for the TV ! As regards pages loading slowly, I am reliably informed that this is due to your ISP providers servers having to Route to a different ISP;s server. You will find that the DL speed etc: is as is stated. I have found that sometimes one can become fixated about contention:speed: packet loss: ping: etc. If it works, It works. !!!!!!!!!!

My brother has Chorus in the North side of Cork City for two months now and he's delighted with it. low pings on game servers, pages loading quickly, torrents zoom down. I think it's a good service for it's price. Just my two cents

yah right, good one. If you knew anything about Chorus/UPC youd know how they route all traffic to London or Amsterdam FIRST before anywhere else, and the bottleneck is from the user to Choruses first few hops, any trace route or performance analysis shows that.

and when they state their packages as being suitable for online gaming, then we are bloody well entitled to get fixated on ping and packet loss. If you want a connection that 'Just works' , get dial up.

Thumbs up OOOps

Sorry to be so blase about contention etc. I don't play games on-line so the pings etc. are not an issue. But, you are right, you are entitled to what you pay for. Sorry.

this is what i was really referring to.

You will find that the download speed is NOT as stated. Even attempting to download from a server peered at LINX, which is basically the first hop outside Aorta/Chello/UPC
