Ive just signed up to chorus as a backup line. As anyone with chorus will know there are monthly limits. In my case 40GB per month.
However you may be suprised they dont offer ANY means of seeing your usage statistics!!! So should you go over the limit you wont know. ( do they even know? ) Customer service refused to tell me anything about how much I had used so far, a bit suspicious Id say. If you go over the limit you get charged 3c per MB, not alot but still nice to know what your using.
Surely there are some legal implications for companys offering limits without allowing their customers to see how much they have used? Imagine waking up to a bill for an extra €30 for that extra 1GB you didnt know you downloaded
At least im only using this as a backup line, but its something to think about if you have plans of joining chorus.
I use bandwidth monitor to check download usage but it only gives the usage on individual pc's. The problem I have is that I have three pc's and and a 360 all going through the one router which is impossible to calculate the monthly usage on.
i downloaded 250 gigs one month recently. i kinda left my computer on for the entire month downloading lots of torrents. no on e believed i'd ever fill my one terabyte harddrive. anyway...i'd had chorus for 1 year and had never gone over the quota before so i had plum forgot about it! anyway...i get a call saying i'm 8 times over my quota and i'm like "****...this could cost me a lot of money". but i just gave out to them saying they gave me no way of nowing what i was downloading so they left me off! so while they do offer a **** service...they are still ever so nice about it...
ps those wankers have stopped me from using bittorrent and i'm having trouble trying to encrypt the flipping thing now .
Well when you download 250 gigs I can kinda understand why they would stop you using it.
Why not download 250gb? I would if I could, but my 1tb HDD is filling up rather quickly. But in all seriousness, why have a cap? If Virgin Media (formally Telewest, NTL, etc.) in the UK can do away with a set cap, then why can't Chorus? So, an AUP (Acceptable Usage Policy) applies. But that's the same with Smart Telecom, who have never had a cap on downloads. Still, Chours, Eircom, and pretty much every other residential ISP in Ireland has one. Silly stuff, really. It's 2007, get with it!
Well for those people who download off LimeWire and such other p2p networks like an "overweight" person eating a burger, which slows down the network for everyone else.
I also had a look at the Virgin Media website and they do have a download cap, 4pm-midnight for a "certain 5%", which I'd say is the usual time those "5%" like to use the Internet. They also have a much lower broadband cap of 1mb download for the "M" package, 2mb download for the "L" package, and 5mb for the "XL" package which is way lower than the cap I have on my provider(Skytel, 40GB). I'm just wondering how long it will take them to increase this 5% as the 5% along with the rest of their customers will download, like an "overweight" person eating a burger!, during the time that the cap is not on.
And I'm not saying we should have download limits its just some people use the Internet to download certain illegal stuff and other big files off these p2p networks. I really don't like these networks as they allow people to download music for free which is not only stealing in the "Thou shall not steal!" kinda way, but it also steals from the artist/s who produced that song. Now I'm not all for giving more money to Bono or Madonna so he can buy more stupid looking glasses or she can throw more money at a black person in Africa so she can adopt his/her child but there are smaller bands who are just starting out.
Theres also the problem with paedophiles using the networks which makes it harder for the authorities to track them as many companies who make the networks don't give much control to the authorities as it would also allow them to track people who upload and download copyrighted songs and programs which would mean people would stop using the network as thats all people mainly use them for.
I MEAN COME ON! This guy is obviously a paedophile whos just realised that Virgin Media has put a download cap on his connection!
Of course all that I have just written above will be useless if you do not know what an "overweight" person looks like when eating a burger, which means you won't know what I mean. I,ve also gone way past your question of why we should have download/upload limits but I' don't care. Theres my answer.

You're right, that's pretty shady stuff. Hope our ISP's don't catch onto this one. It will be adopted, that's for sure.
Oh, and I've done 3gb in 8 hours, easily more than once in the last 6 months. I've come across people who'd beat that even easier than me. They'd be constant downloaders (leave the downloads as they go out), who manage to take over 100gb a month, and somehow also manage to slip past paying for overusage every time.
I've calculated/estimated that my connection can do 9,504,000kb (roughly around 9.06gb) in 8 hours if racing at full speed all the way. That's based on 330kb/sec (BT 3mbit connection).

I don't know why I am going on about it as I downloaded the World Of Warcraft trial from the Blizzard website and it was 4gb. And I know my friend and his family leave the computer on all the time just to download files. I even think they leave on their computer all the time as if they don't their internet connection will not work if they turn it off for some reason.

NTL/Chorus were trying to sell me their BB service recently and the sales guy never mentioned a 3c per meg charge. He said if you go over, they send you out a polite letter reminding you that your over your limit. No charge.
Just checked their usage policy online, seems they can do more than the 3cent fine
“Excessive use” of the Service is defined as usage exceeding your monthly data transfer allowance.
If you exceed your monthly data transfer allowance as determined by UPC, in our sole judgment, UPC may take any of the following actions, or any combination thereof:
· Impose a charge of 3 cent per megabyte or part thereof for exceeding your data transfer limit; and/or
· Upgrade your package to a package with a higher data transfer limit with the corresponding higher monthly fee; and/or
· Downgrade your upload and download speed for a period of one month to dial-up speed, with your monthly fee remaining the same; and/or
· Suspend your access to the services for one month, with your monthly fee remaining the same; and/or
· Terminate your account as per the terms of the User Policy and UPC Terms and Conditions.
I had to laugh, NTL sales were told by managment to say the broadband had no download limit when selling it on the phone. I questioned it and eventually the nice girl, after speaking with her supervisor, said there was a limit of 30gig but, in their opinion, no one could ever, ever, ever possibly reach that.
