Default Avoid Chorus In Cork

Chorus's new ad features a man smashing up his PC with a hurley. Funny, after 90 days with them, that's exactly how I feel. My experience: 30 days on. 30 days partial service. 30 days off, nothing, nada. Now that's what I call rubbish. Anytime I ring their customer service, there is a notice about connection issues in Cork. My advice, avoid them like the plague. Have just signed up to Irish Broadband.

yea i agree, i thought they were fine for the first month then i had a few disconnection issuse, now my speed is almost as bad as dial up, if it wasn't for the contract i would have changed by now. contracts just allow companys to give you a crap service and elimenate the competition. also i have yet to find out what the contention ratio is for chorus. i'm on a 3mb connection and i might as well just have the 1mb or slower, would be the same thing. tried to ring tech support but cost me a fortune on hold so got pissed off and hung up. damn them and their contract!

Default I terminated the contract after 3 months.

Just to let you know, I terminated my chorus service regardless of the contract. The fact that they failed to provide the service, as agreed, means they have no comeback in this regard. If you want to dump an underperforming isp, this is possible regardless of contract.

Hope this helps.

regards,

Félim.

Default Who to go with in Cork?

Not exactly spoilt for choice. Am going with Irish Broadband. They have been hammered in other Irish forums, but I'm going to try their roof mounted wireless system — as opposed to the apartment-type wireless modem product. I'm getting good feedback about BT too. If I was to choose a landline based service, it would probably be theirs. Still, I'm not expert. I'll let you know how Irish broadband goes. Chorus, by the way, seems to have settled down a bit here.

well i heard bad things about irishbroad band and have a one meg conection in my auld folks house , there were a few small problems with it but they have done a lot of upgrades and thing they have really pulled their socks up, as my 1meg ibb connection can streem videos better than my chorus 3 meg, isn't that a joke.

I agree 100% with the OP and the title. Chorus in Cork=a bunch of arse.
I would cancel my contract except they are my only option for BB.
The cablenet service is frequently down in Cork. The other problem is that I have had connection difficulties even when the service isn't down in Cork. But if the two overlap then you have to wait for the service to be fixed before they will come out to solve your local problem.
To add to my irritation I was kept on hold for 6 minutes today only to eventually be told that the customer service department was closed for a "staff briefing" or some crap like that. So I called the sales line (no problem getting through there of course) and the lady I talked to was able to transfer me directly to customer service (a good strategy for the future to keep my phone bill down ).
I would estimate that I have had some service for about 60% of the time I have been a customer. I must surely have called them about 30 times in the last couple of months.
It has come to the stage that I am giving serious thought to moving house where I might have some other options for BB. I work from home and internet access is vital to my job. I've probably spent over a 100 euros on internet cafes over the last couple of months.
But I'm sure that there are thousands of people out there with the same story.

To summarize an overly long post: Avoid Chorus like the plague!

Is Chorus still a bad idea for Cork? I'm thinking of getting a dedicated cable broadband when I move out to a new house so I don't have to share the ADSL line in the house.

Still, going to miss SmartTelecom though (and their non-capped download limit, a feature I found to be the trump card against my previous Digiweb).

Default irish broadband in cork is relatively stable for me

irish broadband have been doing allright in my area of Cork City,
it took almost a year to get their act down here but its rare now that speeds drop below 2.5mb.
it is ridiculously expensive at 49euro per month but i would like it to drop a bit in price.

must test the speed more often and have been looking at cheaper alternatives but it's not a sure thing, guess its better the devil you know eh?

havent posted on this site in a while but will try to post in new regionalised sub folders which are a good idea

Expensive??? I think not. Most other BB suppliers screw you for line rental and have terrible usage caps per month. None of this with IBB. Only system that beats them is smart. but then again if your into torrents IBB is unbeatable with 3mb upload and download. (I can actually believe the day has come where I am praising IBB haha)

Default you get what you pay for?

when has it become acceptable in ireland to pay good money for a crappy service and have the service provider wonder why you're ringing them to complain. i must have missed that f**king meeting.

i have the same story with chorus as everybody else on this page. i have a 6mbs connection that worked like a dream for the first 2 months and now, since the start of january, it drops everyday to a 56kbps or if i'm lucky 150kbps connection, from anytime between 4 and 6pm and about 2am in the morning. i understand the concept of contention but that's taking the piss.

i've rang them several times and had promises of "we'll get this problem solved for ya". i've emailled them and even filled out an online form on the upc.ie website asking for a callback 2 weeks ago, and am still waiting for that call. it makes me sick to think that chorus/ntl are the digital media award winners for the BEST INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER 2008! what the f**k?

Feilim, you're 100% correct. if a service provider doesn't provide you with the service you signed up for then no contract is binding in that case. you've signed a contract with them but they also have a contract with you. sounds to me like they've broken that contract with nearly everyone on this page.

chorus suck! and they're tech support is a joke!

good luck to dustin in the eurovision!!!!

I just want to add that as of Jan 2008 the service provided by Chorus in cork city has been absolutely awful. I have been in a circle talking to about 100 different people for 2 months wondering why my problem persists. I live on Glasheen road and every day from about 6pm-midnight I get the worst connection.
I have run speed tests every day for 2 weeks. And what it comes down to is this. I get about 3 percent of what I'm paying for during this time. that is 3 percent for at least 6 hours a day. The hours when I usually use the internet.
When you call Broadband support they ask you to contact them when the problem persists. So I ring at about 7pm. Now at this time there are only about 2 people working in this department so your on hold for about 15 minutes before anyone picks up. But this is where it gets juicy. Instead of broadband support you get customer care, who deal with t.v problems. The reason for this is, when the bb line is busy it redirects you to customer service. This is apparently to get through all the calls. But the people in customer service are like 'I'm sorry this is customer service, I cannot help you with a bb issue.'
Me 'I know, I called Broadband support not customer care,'
Chorus/NTL (UPC) 'ok sir, I will put you in contact with some one in bb support please hold.'

15 minutes later....

'Hello Customer service, how may I help you?'

'I'm looking for BB support so why do I keep getting redirected to someone who I didnt ask for and who certainly can't help me with my problem?'

'They are very busy tonight, can I arrange a call back?'

'No I dont want a call back, because I have been on to customer service every night for a week and every night I have been told I will get a call back. I have been promised I will get a call back. But each day.. there is no call back. So I ring again and again.. and I'm in this endless loop where noone will talk to me and no one will get me in contact with Broadband support. So for the love of god, will you please put me in contact with them now.. !!!!'

Finally I get a call back from the team leader about 2 months after I report my problem and about 30 calls to Broadband support. Alas I was on the toilet so I missed the call and all the bugger told me during a voice mail was that he couldn't see any problem with my connection and I would have to call the 1euro a min tech support line.

Basically, do not bother with Chorus. They cannot provide the service, the quality or the customer care. In fact the can't even provied 4 percent of that assurance. Its total bull. I'm raging.

Has anyone else in the Glasheen /cork area been having this evening connection issue?

Default Hey Kalis

I'm on College Road, just one road over from ya and my problem is identical. Please read the post just above yours.

There are 2 people in the house i live in with chorus bb. Myself and another girl who lives in the flat on the ground floor and we both have the same problem. i've been calling them since the 16th of january and when i finally get a call back, it's when i'm on a plane to barcelona for a weeks holidays, just the weekend before last, so obviously missed that one. the girl, catherine, who left a message sounded like she had the attitude "you're calling us all along for a call back and now when we eventually call you back you don't answer". That, after 2 months of waiting is not acceptable.

since the first call i feel as if i'm being strung along with promises of "we'll fix this problem for ya" but now after reading your post i think it's a problem they can't fix but they are willing to keep people thinking they can so you continue paying for the crap service.

to get a true reading of how utterly crappy your connection speed is between these times, use another online speed tester other than the one they tell you to use, ie. speedtest.net. it is possible for them to manipulate the test results by boosting your speed while running this test. believe me your connection speed IS worse than what's showing up on this web site. just google "online broadband speed test" and you'll get plenty to choose from.

I'm paying for a 6mbps connection. what connection do you have?

Yeh I have the same connection. 6mb. I'm planning to move to a more suitable connection when the college year is out but until then I'm going to stick with Chorus/NTL or UPC or whatever.

Reading your post gave me some joy. Not that you are having trouble but the fact that I knew I wasn't wrong. Its not my computer, its not my router, its not my wireless modem, its Chorus's ****ing peek time crash. And I would say that its actually quite easy to fix.
