Thought i'd create a thread that listed the programs i use for maintaining my computer. Listed by catagory below along with their weblinks.

Anti virus:

Defragmenting:

Firewall
Lavasoft Personal firewall www.lavasoft.com (29.95 euro) This program uses the same engine as Outpost Personal firewall 3

All the programs above i've found to be excellent both the free ones and the paid for ones. None of them have harmed my computer at all. I'd recommend everyone installing ccleaner which is a great free program for removinbg junk files and cleaning the system registry. Well worth the look.

but the equvalents come free with mac
or as the first mac virus showed it exists
will have to download a patch to protect against this virus

http://www.avast.com/ FREE and probaly the best one out there all u have to do is register and they'll send u out the code lasts for 12months then do it again

I'm using Avast! pro edition. I swear by this product. It's very good. I have heard great things about Nod 32 but haven't tried it yet. I'm running Windows XP x64 edition so good firewalls are hard to come by right now but x64 is based on Server 2003 and is "secure" enough. I use Spybot S&D for spyware removal.

Some of the best software is freeware

I think mcafee is a good firewall never seen a need to change it and frequently surfing infested sites

It also has allows you to trace and log whos pinging you and what ports attacks are on

I've been using Lavasoft's Adaware for about two years, just downloaded Windows Defender and did a full scan, it said my PC was clear. Then ran Adaware and it came up with 39 items! (mainly tracking cookies)

Isn't Defender still in Beta? Still, not finding any of the 39 items must be cause for concern

Yeh Defender is on Beta2, it really surprised me as I spent last weekend cleaning up my sister-in-law's PC and could have sworn the opposite happened i.e. Defender picked up items that Adaware had not... must run the scan again... Not sure if Firefox has something to do with it..

PS: In fact, "on mature reflection" it seems to offer links to dangerous and very risky sites. The fact that the post offers downloads of free porn should make it a no-no!
