To find the version of IE, you can go to Start -> Run -> type msinfo32 -> click run. Go to Internet Settings -> Internet Explorer -> Summary. In the right you'l see the file version.
I don't think that this will solve your problem.
Also, it's not possible to uninstall IE as it's a core component of the OS - hence the reasons why it's responsible for causing so many problems - though you could try upgrading from IE6 to IE7. Firefox is a much better browser and I would recommend that you use that instead
Restart the system in Safe Mode. Tap F8 as the when you see the boot logo, and select Safe Mode from the boot menu. Log in as your usual user account and try to run IE. If it starts ok, go to Tools, Options and then Advanced. If you're using IE7, you'll see a reset button, click that and follow the prompts. If you're using IE6 use the restore defaults button. Then go to General -> Temporary Internet Files section -> Settings. On the page that opens up click the View Objects button.
This will list the ActiveX components that are installed delete any that show as being damaged. Click OK a couple of times to close the Internet Properties dialog and restart the machine and log in as usual. Try opening IE and see how it goes.
Post back if you have any other problems.
Cheers,
Paul
