Default IE Problem - probably not for this board?

Hi Everyone

This problem is probably not for this board but I thought I would try anyway I cannot get my IE browser to work all day today. It just wont open and hangs until I close it down by ending task. I can get onto the web using Firefox no problem. Anyone having similar problems? Sometimes IE can be slow but its never NOT opened at all before.

Thanks
Joan

Hi joandublin

You could try uninstalling IE and then reinstalling -

Go to start - control panel - add or remove programs.

Scroll down the list to Windows Internet Explorer and click the remove button.

Use your other browser to download the IE install file to your desktop from the Microsoft site for IE7 or IE6 whichever is your preference.

Run the file and IE will then reinstall.

To find the version of IE, you can go to Start -> Run -> type msinfo32 -> click run. Go to Internet Settings -> Internet Explorer -> Summary. In the right you'l see the file version.

I don't think that this will solve your problem.

Also, it's not possible to uninstall IE as it's a core component of the OS - hence the reasons why it's responsible for causing so many problems - though you could try upgrading from IE6 to IE7. Firefox is a much better browser and I would recommend that you use that instead

Restart the system in Safe Mode. Tap F8 as the when you see the boot logo, and select Safe Mode from the boot menu. Log in as your usual user account and try to run IE. If it starts ok, go to Tools, Options and then Advanced. If you're using IE7, you'll see a reset button, click that and follow the prompts. If you're using IE6 use the restore defaults button. Then go to General -> Temporary Internet Files section -> Settings. On the page that opens up click the View Objects button.

This will list the ActiveX components that are installed delete any that show as being damaged. Click OK a couple of times to close the Internet Properties dialog and restart the machine and log in as usual. Try opening IE and see how it goes.

Post back if you have any other problems.

Cheers,
Paul

Thank you all so much for your replies You have all been very helpful.

As it turns out, IE started working again yesterday and I was able to check the version. It is IE7 so I guess that means I am up to date, so to speak....

I have no idea why it wouldnt work as its working fine now but I am going to start using Firefox. (I agree Paul - it is a much better and quicker browser). IE is just too inreliable lately.

The only problem is I have hundreds of bookmarks on IE that I need. Does anyone know if I can import them to Firefox in one easy go?

Once again I really appreciate all the help so far.

Cheers for now
Joan

ASFAIK, when you install firefox, it prompts you to import your Favourites from IE.

However, if it doesn't, you can do the following:

In Firefox go to File -> Import and follow the wizard to import bookmarks. And that's it. Nice and easy.
