Question New Network Card

I'm on NTL 2MB line.
I'm using the PCI Network card that was in the PC when the guy from NTL did the installation last summer.
I've got a new "USB to fast Ethernet Adapter" I would prefer to use ( to free up a PCI slot)
Anyone know what needs to be done to get this working - When I try to use it I dont get an IP address... Do I need to register the MAC Address of the new card with NTL perhaps?
Any reasonable theories or suggestions are welcome!

Does your PC recognise the card?

What is in your network settings?

PC Recognises it as ADM851X USB To Fast Ethernet Adapter.
To say I dont get an IP address with it is not entirely true- I get a 169.xxx etc address which is (afaik) an address windows assigns when no response comes from the provider. I've looked around for a solution that works but to no avail...

Just clutching at straws here, but you have set it to acquire an ip address automatically ?

Power cycle your ntl box. I believe you need to do this when you change nic. i.e. it doesn't recognise the mac address.

It was a doddle really. Well I thought so, after everything else I tried.
While the PC was off I disconnected the network cable from the PCI Network card and from the Modem. Then I disconnected the power from the modem.
I left them for a few minutes, then connected the network cable back, this time to the USB Network adapter and the Modem. I powered on the PC and let it boot up fully. I disabled the PCI network connection, then powered on the modem.
All the rest happened automatically in the background.
I'm no longer using the PCI Network card.
