Default Problem using Netgear TA612V with wireless broadband

I have a Netgear TA612V and wireless broadband. If I connect my wireless broadband directly to the TA612V it does not see it. If I connect the wireless broadband to my Netgear WGR614 router and connect the internet port on the TA612V to a Lan Port on the WGR614 then the TA612V sees the internet and is able to register a phone connected to the TA612V with my VOIP provider Blueface. If I make a call the recipient's phone rings but no voice traffic passes in either direction. Blueface have confirmed that if I call their speaking clock it is sending information back. I have tried every combination of Port Forwarding and Port triggering on both routers but the result is always the same. Is anybody successfully using an ATA adapter of any sort with a wireless broadband connection. My broadband provider is Digital Forge.

Hi Tony - send me an email: nospam@mac.com and I should be able to get that sorted for you.

Default Update on TA612V

I have made progress on the problem. The TA612V is primarily attached to a cable or DSL Modem. By using a cross over cable to connect it to my wireless broadband and port triggering the voip ports (outgoing 5060:5060 incoming 10000:20000) I was able to hear when using the phone but no one could hear me. I thought this was due to a total drop off of upload speed as although the download speed stayed the same as when the broadband was attached to my original router the upload speed dropped to 2% of what it had been. By reducing the MTU size on the TA612V to 1436 the upload speed returned but there is still no outgoing speech. Port forwarding the outgoing port has no effect.

In the end I used a Linksys ATA and returned the Netgear. Later my wireless broadband provider changed his ISP and some of his equipment. I then tried a friends Netgear and it worked perfectly with the default settings. I suspect the problem was with the provider/ his ISP not the Netgear.

This is happening all to often. Some ISP's (I am certainly NOT talking about all here) connected to telco's have the opinion that they can "fiddle" with the voip capability (they can detect voip traffic fairly reliably) if they offer a competing service; OR if they feel like it.

What does this do? Imagine you were a customer that knew nothing of networks; your first voip experience is tinny/echos/does not connect correctly. You would assume (incorrectly, thanks to the ISP) that voip was just a gimmick and stop using it - hindering progress. The CoNReg's opinion usually is that "one person, pffft" or "oo shiny money bag, thanks [insert crabby ISP name here]. nothing to see here, move along.".

Honestly, those ISP's (and telco's) should be named and shamed. In some countries (well, those with a fair trade system), they would get fined and shut down for uncompetitive behaviour.
