Default Any good experiences with DigiWeb? West Dub

I just got off the phone to Digiweb sales and I have to say the 36:1 contention rate from back in the day of 14kbaud dial-up modems has probably scared me off enough not to even bother asking any further questions. I noted that this isn't mentioned on their website and the Advertising Standards Authority informs me they don't have to on their own website. So anyway an 8 meg line would only need 220kbps to be contractualy fulfilled by DW. The sales man assures me that he has that line and comfortably gets 7.2meg everyday.

What is your experience?? I need a good speed for Skype and occasional online work and general online browsing. Download limits are not an issue for me.

Thumbs down digiweb

i have digiweb and the speeds are fairly good, but if u have any issues there customer support is absolutely dreadful and for that reason id stay away if i was you, they also increased prices in december with no notification(in times of recession and more consumer choice that isnt a good move!) so be warned if ye do have problems

Thanks Shane. Any word on the Highs and Lows of the speeds you get? And also when it's low does it happen routinely like after school hours?

That 36:1 has me rightly put off. For now I'm in the disgraceful position of hacking my neighbours connection while I play russian roulette with the current offers.

By the way I'm really only interested in the wireless Metro product - DSL service will just use the Eircom equipment.

Hi Nossie

Like SlimboyJim I too have the 8MB service from Digiweb. However I am using their Metro wireless service (broadband & phone) and after a few technical issues at the start everything is running fine now. I am on average getting a D/L speed of 7.65M and an U/L speed between 760-930K. Tneir customer service overall is as mentioned is not the greatest however their technical support is good. Most of them know their stuff and will help you.

However you mention that you are in West Dublin. What area? The reason I ask is a colleague of mine tried to get it in the Dublin 20 area but was unsuccessful in getting Metro but could get DSL. He did not get DSL but signed up with UPC (Chorus/NTL) for their 20MB package and seems to have no complaints so far.

Overall I would recommend their Metro service.

John

Hi

Citywest should not present any problems with regard to getting Metro and service should be good there, as Digiweb had a base there before their communications centre opened in Blanchardstown. So I'm sure you will not be too far away from a base station. Check with them to see where the nearest base station to where you live is. Even better check with their tech support on 1890 940 405 and they should tell you.

When I originally switched from BT Ireland to Digiweb back around April '07, I use to get pretty good ping times (~30ms to any most Irish hosts) and a consistent download speed of ~2.6Mb for the first year. However, once Eircom made widespread upgrades to its exchanges, ours is one of the unlucky ones to not upgraded (even today) and my ping time got far worse.

While I'm not sure if this is a fault with Digiweb, over the last few months my ping time has steadily gotten worse, varying from ~100ms at best of times to over 500ms at peak times, which means webpages with a lot of images can take a while to load all the individual images. For speed, I still get up to 2.6Mb on speedtests at times, but the round trip response time is noticeable when opening webpages.

The following is a ping test to irishisptest.com at this time of writing to give an idea. Digiweb DSL (at least the "7.6Mb" package I'm on) is not for gamers. Thankfully I'm not a gamer:

I get the impression from both Sean & Pajoman that they using DSL and it just happens that Digiweb are their ISP. To pajoman first. Only 3 companies (I may stand corrected) offer anything close to or above 20MB using telephone lines (DSL), these being BT, Smart & Magnet. Digiweb never offered 20MB or even close to it. Their maximum according to their website Welcome to Digiweb - Ireland's leading broadband, hosting and phone provider is 10MB for DSL & 12MB for Metro Wireless. A year ago it was much slower. To both of you from what I see the quality of your phone lines need a lot to be desired and you can be sure that the encumbent operator (Eircom) will do nothing about it, as they control the network and no matter which ISP you're with it will make no difference especially after the so called upgrade and according to recent media reports are cutting staff numbers.

To Noosie. I still stand over wireless (Digiweb Metro or Breeze from IBB/Imagine). Your quality of service will be somewhat better that DSL. Even UPC cable (if available in your area) would be better. as you would not have to deal with crappy Eircom at all. Just a thought.

Sorry, I just realised I misread the thread title, as I'm based in Co. Donegal.

Eircom has recently upgraded its two business broadband products 10Mbps & 12Mbps to 12Mbps & 24Mbps respectively. So info is mentioned on their website's Business section. For example, at work, we got a letter saying that our 10Mbps package has been upgraded to 12Mbps down / 1Mbps up with unlimited traffic allowance and can confirm that the router is sync'd at 12Mbps down / 1Mbps up. While they have brought down the prices, they are still quite expensive, but then again, not surprising for a business connection.

I have to agree with Cunnijo, the only services that Digiweb have complete control over is their wireless services (metro and mobile) as all dsl traffic goes through eircoms hopeless exchanges.
Personally i use Digiwebs mobile service in north Dublin and find it fairly good. The qos and ping while not perfect are more than acceptable for online gaming and voip and is much better than the O2 and vodafone options.
