Question Slow Upload in Windows XP

Hi everyone! I've been looking through these forums for a while but have only just signed up now! Great site you have here!

Anyway, onto the matter at hand. I have an Eircom 2Mbps connection (upgraded from 1Mbps last month), and so far everything is great. I'm consistently getting 1.74Mbps download (great!), and, until about two weeks ago, I was getting 220kbps upload (also great!). However, in Windows XP, my upload speeds have now dropped to 60-120kbps - too slow to connect to most gaming servers (the main reason why I upgraded the connection). However, if I perform the speed tests in Ubuntu Linux, I consistently get 217kbps. Does anyone know a reason for the marked difference between operating systems? If so, do you know how to get my connection back to the way it was in XP?

I have scanned for spyware, adware, viruses, etc. I've tried uninstalling firewalls and virus guards; I've tried re-installing Windows XP and I've even tried it in a virtual machine in Linux - each have the same result…

The olny thing i can think of is blocked ports or backround utilitys sending packets. Recheck your speeds here and then on http://www.speedtest.net/and compare, also testing at different times day and night.

Thumbs up

Thanks, I gave that a go. The speeds on that seem to be OK (I'm getting around 205kbps), but nearly all the gaming servers still won't connect me. It seems that the upload starts off slowly and accelerates. As the server (and the speed test here) only analyse the first few seconds of the connection, it sees a slow connection when in the long run the connection is perfect. I'll have to do some more investigating…

Do you know where I can get a connection analyser to find out if something else is sending packets (or at least attempting to send them) without my knowledge?
