Default New Eircom customer - ADSL dropping when using non Netopia modem

Hello, I'm a new Eircom Broadband customer, recently moved to Drogheda from Dublin. In Dublin we used Smart and had great service, however they don't cover the Drogheda area. Our Netopia modem arrived yesterday so we duly plugged it in and got going. However, I'd much prefer to use our own modem - since we already have a d-link DSL 2740B. I found the settings on the eircom site for setting up non eircom provided modems, and duly got going with the d-link.

However, at 5pm the connection started to drop. At first it was for around 15 mins and then from 6-6.30, and then again from 6.30 onwards I was unable to reconnect using the d-link. However at 7pm I plugged the netopia modem back in and it connected almost immediately. Therefore I suspect there is a setting somewhere that is being sent from the netopia and not the d-link.

Has anyone any experience/resolution of this? We're avid online gamers and we like the configurability of the d-link, but we want a reliable connection! I've looked at some previous threads here but can't see exactly the same issue.

I have a D-Link DSL-2740B on eircom too. I know exactly the problem that you're having (seeing as I've encountered it before). From what I've seen the router at times (about once every month or 2) just randomly drops the connection settings.

In order to fix the problem you just have to re-enter the settings (DNS, username, password, etc...) and it is fine again. I highly doubt that the problem is eircom. It's more lightly to be the router. The reason why when you plug back in the netopia router it works is because it still has the settings.

I've also had a Belkin F5D7230-4 before and the same thing occurred.

Basically take note of the required settings and if it happens just re-enter the settings. If the problem is really annoying you contact D-Link (eircom technically don't have to support you anyway because you're no longer using one of their routers)
