Default Speed test results over Eircom

Hi from a newbie

My Eircom contract is coming to and end, and I thought I'd check the connection speed to see whether it is worthwile moving

Speed Test results always end up around 500kbps - is this Half a Meg (opposed to the 2 Meg service I believe I've signed up to)

This in mind, I also tested an O2 3G Modem, and this gave me 360 kbps - which would relate to the 3.6 Meg service they are offer?

Perhaps I've got my Megs & kbps mixed up, because the Eircom service seemd faster than O2 when testing by using IE.

thanks for any advice you can offer

The eircom is faster by a fair bit there but the speeds you got on the test are 1/4 of the 2mb advertised. You also have to take into account though that the 2mb is the speed of the line itself and other users nearby would be on the same one etc.

I agree. If you got only 360Kbps for a 3.6 Meg service, then thats only a tenth of what it should be. You should be getting 3600Kbps or 3.6Mbps.

Eircom 500Kbps is dreadful for a 2meg service. Check out Cable modem from ntl or wireless metro service from Digiweb. Both give 6 meg service now for approx 36 euros inc phone so dump that eircom land line if possible.

We peer with Eircom over INEX, so the connection speeds you get to the test should be a fairly good reflection of reality
