Hey Graham,
at least your getting 1.54 mbs try .18 to .22 mbs. I'm paying for a 3 mbs conection. all was fine until about 3 weeks ago. Varius speed tests show this speed over a wide time frame. After 35 minutes proveing to the Eircom tech guy that the speed was really this slow and after some "tests" he agreed to esclate the issue to a line technitian. I'm not holding my breath. I'm in Dublin and I can tell you the problem is as bad here as in Cork.
I really belive that Eircome have over subscribeed the amount of conections per node, i.e. the exchange circuts are being hammered.
If Eircom cannot resolve this issue in the next few days I'm going to complaine to the telecoms regulation.....
Really angry at being changed for an unuseable service an I have been an eircom BB customer sence 2000......
Customer satisfaction my Ar***
I'm living in the midlands and having the same problem. I have the 7mb eircom n all day it seems to be grand then gradually starts to slow down from 4pm. it slows down to around 700 kbps untill it eventually goes between 10pm and 11. then i can't connect to the internet at all untill the morning.
this has been going on for 2 months now and i have had engineers out and called the broadband support nearly every second nite. i'm really pissed off as the only time i get to go on the net without interuptions is after 10.
At least I'm not alone in this and hopefully eircom will get there fingers out and get it sorted. I'm going to stay on their case till it's resolved anyway.
All is well with Eircom Broadband again. It turned out I had a faulty modem. Here are my current speedtest results.I hope that everyone else that was having problems with Eircom Broadband are after getting your problems resolved.
At least you had a real problem,
after much hassle and 35 mins on tech support Eircom finally adminited my problem is related to a "fault" at the local exchange. This "fault" will take five weeks to "fix".
In the mean time I have to live with .188 to .22 conection speeds on a 3 mb plan
I am not happy with Eircoms attitude,
if they are provideing a service at least try to make that commitement.
I have tried two sepperate modems and numberous speed tests and by their own admission the speed issue is their problem.
Obviously they have over loaded the exchange. For goodness dsake how can a company be allowed to sell a service they have no chance of giveing without an exchange upgrade?
I'm in Cork and paying for a 3mbs service which usually delivers about 2.5 - 2.6.
I've had two problems:
I'm using the Netopia 3347NWG modem provided 4 years ago. A few months ago I had sporadic connection failures (usually late at night). In fairness to Eircom support the problem was solved after 4 calls and so far hasn't happened again). The modem was "re-programming itself" or some such and a few adjustments in 'expert mode' on the Eircom Broadband page (http://192.168.1.254/) eventually did the job.
Now I have a new problem: connection failure followed by a very slow connection (tested on Hosting365 Status Real-Time Status or DSL ZoneUK - broadband for everyone seeing as this site's test no longer works). Currently my connection speed is 0.16 mbs.
I've called support twice and got a message both times saying "there's a problem in your area, we're trying to fix it...".
I'll try and speak to someone in the morning.
Has anyone else in the Carrigaline/Cork City area had a sudden drop in download speed recently?
Having had the slow down (to 0.2 - 0.35 mbps) for the last 2 days, as reported in the news, my normal service (2.6 mbps of the 3 mbps) has now returned.
I did have to re-enter the password into the Netopia modem to re-start the connection though (via the Eircom broadband-page/website-whatever it is http://192.168.1.254).
No wonder I couldn't get through to Eircom BB support!
My BB has had no further problems but I'm getting a few of the dodgy re-directs (to the lady in her underwear)
Does anyone have any info on any possible security issues for home users? Could some programme have put malware/spyware on our machines?
(just because I'm paranoid it doesn't mean hackers aren't trying to hijack my Mac!)
Can any tech-experts out there offer any reassurance...?
After reading the Irish Times article, I have to say Eircom's response is pretty lame. Putting a notice on a website when access is so patchy is not good enough. I can't find the notice on the website this evening.
But at least my suspicions of a DNS problem are confirmed and things seem to be better now.

Reason: Spelling mistake

Had the same problem a couple of months ago, was on to the tech people and they tried to convince me that my line was not suitable for 7mb and cut me down to 6mb, still had the same problem and got on to them again. Told them that by logging on to the router and shutting it down, and then reconnecting it would be OK for a few hours. So I told them to have someone at the house the following day or I was going to change my provider. Guy arrived the next day, was only after being in Gorey where they have 10mb, I convinced him that it was my router that was at fault, so he got one from the Van that was used in Gorey for the 10mb, and I have not had a problem since. He also told me that a lot of the routers that were in use were the first ones for the 1mb and were never upgraded when the customer upgraded his or her broadband connection.
I am realy pissed off about eircom. About 2 years i am in eircom. First i had 3Mb internet and it was enought for me until 2 month ago. Speed was jumping and slowing all the time. Then i am just ordered other, faster plan 7Mb. now its even worse!! thats the speed that i usualy have on my 7Mb plan, i rang them, and its still the same. just dont know what to do. Why they suggesting speed like that for people and cant give it for them. One word to describe them - liars!!!!! Its f****** terrible!!

That is the truth of it, the fundamental truth with Eircom they blatantly lie, either about the service you're really getting or that they have a problem or that their going to do anything about it in the unlikely event of them admitting somthethings wrong.
Why are they so complacent because our government doesn't give a toss!! If this happened in mainland Europe no Government would put up with it, also all the infratructure is in place here to have broadband speed nearer the EU average but it will never be hooked up because Eircom, whoever, doesn't think it's financially worth it. It's @#*#* that's what it is.
Well, for one. I know that there is nowhere in Ireland that you will get the shown broadband speed. Unless you are actually in the building. It's a fact. And I won't get into it.. google it.
Anywho..
Just of recently (uhm.. about a week now) I have been getting these god damn horrid speeds for my broadband.
I am a web-master and have a few websites to keep updated and control of.
But if it takes LAN speeds to do this, then I just bloody can't.
The year is now 2009. And closing fast, Irish Telecommunication services are as bad as most parts of Russia. Take Meteor, 99% of the country? How is it that in Sligo, my town, I can barely ever get coverage? In a county's town!
It seems that the Internet providers haven't caught up to the year yet either.
It might as well be 1999. (Oh ****, the millennium bug?!)
Upgraded from 1mb speed a few months back, after realizing it was starting to be dated. And now am on 3mb for a while.
Heh.. Might as well be calculated in kbps rather than mbps in fairness.
Yhey I got .12 mbps!.. on a 3mb line.
Wait.. hmm thats not right..
Between getting connected with a wireless card and this ant that and other things.. I'm damn sick of Eircom. I really am.
Why does it feel like I'm living in a third world country when it comes to these things?!
I haven't rang Eircom. Because in fairness, I don't think talking to an Indian who really doesn't care will change things much.
Yeah information age my arse: not here thanks we don't want it that seems to be the message we're being fed. I've seen a handful only of satisfied Eircom customers, browse the web for "eircom S**t and you've plenty of options. I would give vital parts of my anatomy for there to be a choice but that aint happening.
Yup... A damn shame, I just can't work with. But who do I go to?! In all honesty I don't think anyone cares, little of all the politicians discussing broadband speeds. I have been at a few meeting (as a visitor ofc) where they were discussing the matter in the Daíl and serious.. All talk, no action.
Far more constant than I would like personally.
Ok, I would put up if this happened like. .once a week. Or you know, the odd time.
But for a bloody week straight is just a bit too much.
Its never been this bad though, but not to kid you, it's not usually far off. I have never ever seen my broadband speed (Since I moved to 3mbps) move above 2mbps. Never. And that was for like .. 3 seconds when it first connected. Expecting it to get higher. it got lower. And fast. With a top speed nowadays, and I mean like.. 5 am in the morning speed once every month, is 1.5mbps.
I have noticed that Cork's server has disappeared from Speedtest.net on Friday.Does anyone know why?My speeds are down a bit again.I hope it's not a repeat of a few months ago.Edit-Look at Limerick's server ping of 205 ms.That's not a good sign.
