Default Eircom Broadband's February 8th letter to customers

Read this despicable letter carefully, or you may miss the point.

I will comment beneath.

8th February 2006

Good news for eircom broadband customers!

Dear Mr X,

As an eircom broadband home plus customer, you already know the many benefits of broadband Internet access with eircom. We are pleased to announce that since the end of January 2006, your broadband service has just improved. The following are the benefits you can now enjoy.

• Higher Download/Upload Speed: Increases from 2Mbps/128Kps to 3Mbps/ 384Kbps at no extra cost!

• Higher Download Allowance: Increases from 16G to 30G. You can download more at no extra cost!

• New Service Name: For account administration and billing purposes, your broadband package name has now changed from Home Plus to Home Professional.

All of this means that with your broadband service, eircom broadband home professional, you can download information much more quickly and send & receive larger volumes of information, faster than ever for the same price as you currently pay.

Finally, should you wish to change your current package, you can do so easily by logging on to www.eircom.ie/changebroadband.

We remain committed to delivering the highest quality broadband service for you, our valued customer and hope you enjoy these improvements to your service.

Yours Sincerely
Des Keating
Broadband project manager

Takes a minute to realise what they've done, huh?

The clue is in the New Service Name. 'Your broadband package name has now changed from Home Plus to Home Professional.'

Nope, that ain't true. Home Plus is still readily available. It's just considerably cheaper, in line with Irish broadband prices. You have been switched.

Highly inappropriate but sure, ye can always manually change it back, yourself, like.

Of course, when I test my speed every day I don't get 3MB - I get 2.07MB.

Oh, and my call isn't important to them...

I'm switching and I think everyone else should to.

It seems as if you have missed the point Eircom have upgraded their customers speeds - somebody previously on 1mb now has 2 mb - somebody previously on 2mb now has three - there is no extra charge for the extra speed. In the process they have renamed their products. Presumably there is nothing to stop a customer moving back to the speed they previously had except now they will have it for a lower price. What's despicable about that?

And all dsl products are contended so getting over 2mb for a 3mb product is not bad.

I am no fan of Eircom but it you are going to criticise them (or indeed any company) at least get your facts straight.

No, that's incorrect. They have not renamed their products. Visit their website and you will see Broadband Home Plus 2MB, what many of us signed up for, still exists.

It's just gotten cheaper, for competitive reasons. Other companies were offering far better rates so they had to bring theirs down a bit too.

Rather than start billing less, however, they bumped people up into a bigger MB bracket. That way they could keep their fees just as high and claim they were merely doing their customers a favour.

Most people will interpret this as an upgrade, as you have.

They doubled your speed at no extra cost with the option to revert to the speed you were previously on at a lower cost - what's wrong with that?

It is completely wrong and misleading on your part to describe their letter as despicable. Presumably you chose to go with Eircom knowing that they charge more than most other isps - I have yet to hear of them forcing anyone to take their broadband so what exactly is your problem with them?

You have plenty of choices out there.

Im not so sure about this move by eircom. Yes, it seems like an upgrade but are people getting the increase in speeds? Has your speed increased, in line with what they have claimed in the letter?
I dont think 2Mb/s is acceptable on a 3Mb line. It should be at least 2.4Mb/s.
If your not happy switch to the cheaper package and hopefully you will still be getting the same speeds as you were before this letter was sent out.

I was on the 1 Mb package and was "upgraded" to 2 Mb's. I don't download much, so saw little "real" difference with the speed increase, so I filled out the "change broadband" form to go back to the 1Mb service. Got my bill and sure enough they have decreased the cost, but I am still getting the 2 Mb service! Poor little darlings in the exchange must be too busy to change it back!
