Default Eircom Poor Speeds and even poorer Customer Service

I am an Eircom Home Starter Customer and was reasonably happy with the service until around mid January. Since then I have been getting speeds of around 3.5 KBps [based on www.eircom.net/speedtest]. This deterioration in service coincided with my changing my calls and phone line rental to another company. Both Eircom and my new phone company have washed their hands of the issue and say it is not a matter for them. Is my only option to go back to Eircom for my phone calls and line rental or to switch my broadband?

Angry no hope?

I don't know wheter this will help or not. I am a Home Professional customer. Allegedly I get a 3 GB connection, but 5 weeks ago tomorrow ( Tuesday ) my speed dropped to 499Kbs and less on a regular basis. So far, Eircom have not been in a position to resolve the problem and now say they don't know how they can! I have written directly to Broadband project Manager at Eircom.ie re this, and am currently awaiting a reply. I am not holding out too musch hope. I feel I will probably go wireless and drop Eircom altogether unless I get some satisfaction soon.

Examiner,

I would say it depends on where you live. Check out some of the other providers
mentioned on this site. Pick out a few that would suit you then see if they
operate in your area. There are lots of options beyond Eircom. Unless you
live in the wilderness of course. Poor souls.

Changing your voice traffic provider should not effect the quality of your DSL connection.

We never used Eircom except for line rental and have never had any issues with our DSL

Assuming you mean a 3Mb connection?

Default Update

My speeds have just improved dramatically, now 186.27 KBps. I also, coincidentally, got a letter from Eircom today informing me my package has been improved [now up to 3 meg?]. Hopefully the inprovement will be sustained, thanks for suggestions.

Hey Gerry can you PM with that Manager's details, I wish to write to him too. I have same service as you and getting the same crappy speeds since the upgrade. In fact the speeds were much better before the upgrade.

EDIT - Sorry lads, going blind, I just cope the name on that letter Eircom us out recently.

In relation to your issue regarding poor Broadband service, I would advise joining Cablenet Broadband from Chorus. I recently had a problem with speed with Cablenet Broadband but the matter was resolved by Chorus and am now getting speeds of up to 2.89 Mb per second as I am 3Mb service customer. Join Cablenet Broadband because you'll get great customer support.

Lightbulb Rates.. What are they?

Here's a Little tip about the Down Load rates.

1st. The rates are in Mega bits not bytes.

2nd. The service itself has an overhead. ie. some of your bandwidth is
used for server communication. Ie sending/receiving simultaneously,
server query, etc.

3rd. You can calculate the rates as follows:
1Mb (Bit) = 1024Kb (Kilo Bits)... 8 Bits make 1 byte therefore 1024Kb/8 = 128KB(per sec) .
So a 2Mb Connection would have DL rate of (256KB/s).. 3Mb = (384KB/s)
BUT.. as I said you also lose a percentage to overhead.

Personally I have a 2Mb connection with Eircom and the black Knight test reported 1.75Mb DL and 210Kb upload that I find quite acceptable.

So, except under ideal situations, nobody really gets the full Dl/Up rates they pay for.

Hope this helps
