Eircom to drop prices

According to some reports today Eircom is set to drop both the retail and wholesales prices of their broadband packages.

Customers who use the 1Mbps Home Starter product will save EUR5 a month, the 2Mbps Home Plus product will drop by EUR10 a month, and the 3Mbps Home Pro product will drop in price by EUR15 a month.

It'll be interesting to see how the other vendors will react. A lot of the companies offering DSL solutions are based off Eircom's network, so they maybe in a position to drop their prices, while those that aren't may have to rejig their offerings

I had been thinking of a move to BT, but have been put off by stories of billing nightmares. Now I will stay with Eircom and get the 2meg package for the same price as my current 1meg package.

Then you never know, with stories in the papers about Smart's financial woes SKY might swoop and buy them up and introduce free broadband for Sky Tv customers!!!

It would be interesting but I suspect that SKY would prefer to use a network that already reaches all its customers rather than SMART with the majority of the country [to quote their website] "not on the Smart Broadband Network Build Programme".

Still the thought is nice.

Eircom have announced their new pricing

Home Starter - 1MB €24.99
Home Plus - 2MB €29.99
Home Pro - 3MB €48.40

Correct me if I am wrong but these new prices do [b]NOT[b] beat the current offerings from the other ISPs who resell the Eircom bitstream product.

So what will their incentive to reduce prices? For example, the new price of €48.40 for 3Mb is still €8.40 more than I pay to BT.

They don't have many more options, I can't see them buying Eircom or BT!

With Sky's financial might I could forsee a huge advance in the build program over Smart's paltry effort. Smart's market value is now only €18 million (although the fibre optic network is held by a seperate company) Sky could buy it from the petty cash tin!

Until the LLU fiasco in Ireland is sorted, I can't see sky making any move on buying an ISP here. It just wouldn't be worth it to them.

just off the phone with irish broadband.ie,
they wont drop prices ala eircom
i'm paying 48 euro for a 2mb connection which they are promising to upgrade to eircoms 3mb offering at 48euro.
there are no plans to charge for 2mb connection at eircoms now reduced price of 29euro.

My feeling is that 3mb up from 2mb is simply not worth paying a now extra 20euro per month. We may very well see speeds which only currently match a good internet connection from irish broadband.
I'm very very tempted to switch to eircom.
