Default I HATE EIRCOM

My dialup connection only tested to be 14.4kb/s. How bad is that. Can you complain to eircom or why am I gettings speeds worse that standard dialup?

Sounds like your phone line is "split"

Basically eircom have placed a device on your phone line that is packing one or more phonelines into a single pair of copper cables. So, you're either sharing with your second line or one of your neighbours!

Some of these devices date from the days before fast modems / DSL etc

Ring eircom and see if you can get rid of it. If that fails, you will need to order ISDN or DSL to force them to remove it as neither technology will operate over a "pairgain" line.

Also make sure that your own internal phone wiring's ok. If you've a modern eircom socket (with two screws on the front) you can do this very easily. Simply remove the front plate of the master socket / ntu and you'll find a second socket behind it. Once the plate is removed all of your internal wiring's disconnected and hidden socket gives you access to the raw line without any of your internal wiring.

If you plug in your modem and it tests ok, your wiring's faulty.. If not it's a line fault.

If you have the older beige sockets there is no way of testing this without a screwdriver & physically removing the extension wiring.

Best of luck!

Default Go Wireless

If you can go broadband, go Irishbroadband - wireless. Then contact Blueface.ie and transfer (free) your landline and start using Voip Technology. I pay Eircom Nothing per month and save at least 100 Euro
per month

IBB is not available countrywide, so it isn't an option for everybody yet

Whereabouts are you in the country? As Sean said, "splitting" can be very common in low population density areas such as quite rural areas as it saves on cabling along the telegraph poles. Not really much you can do about it really except complain but don't expect eircom to do anything as they don't necessarily guarantee a speed on dial up.

From my experience, they have a very strict policy *not to garantee* anything at all ! :P

You'll hear a lot of talk about Eircom and what to do.

Here's my two cents.

Test your broadband.

If it's the right speed consistently, be happy. It might slow occasionally, but I wouldn't read too much into that. All broadband suppliers have moments on a monthly basis.

If it's the wrong speed consistently, switch. Because Eircom will never take any responsibility. They won't fix a localised, consistent problem and they won't refund you. So just get away from them.
