Oh yeah Spikie boy! We all good! Cheers for all the posts!
Well folks, why can we not get the service we pay for.
For several months I have had varying download speeds, from 1.75mbs which was may average up to May this year on 2mbs package with BT. Now it can vary from a dead stop with all lights showing steady on to DSL only on.
When working varying from less .500mbs to this morning 1.35mbs.
Is it that we have BB but the Lines cannot now carry the Traffic.
What can we do?
Good question. I contacted ComReg on Friday and they said I would need to lodge a formal complaint with Eircom first. I intend to do this tomorrow. If I have not received a satisfactory reply within ten working days I can return to ComReg.
The service is still not satisfactory. My DL speeds are very variable. I have a 1Mbps service which used to reliably deliver DL speeds of 750kbps-860kbps, which was acceptable. Now I am seeing variability from 340kbps to 860kbps. It's all over the place and it ain't my line.

Sigh.
Hi, folks.
I'm new to all of this, and I'm a bit bothered by performance issues. If I understand this post correctly, speeds at about 80% of the nominal speed are not to be considered a real problem, whereas speeds averaging about 50% of the nominal speed would be counted as bad. Is that about right?
I'm trying to get my head around the idea of an acceptable level of underperformance.

Hi padraigb,
Please let me clarify my earlier post: I live 5900m from my exchange; this is near the outer limit of DSL availability. In fact, Eircom will usually not supply a DSL service to customers more than 4500m from the exchange.
A characteristic of DSL is that performance drops with distance and I am subscribed to a 1Mbps service. Consequently, I am happy to live with performance in the region of 760kbps-860kbps.
Note that Eircom provides "up to" 1Mbps of download capacity in my case; they are not obliged to offer the same service at long distances as those lucky enough to be living quite close to an exchange. Needless to say, there is not much point in me signing up to a package with higher download speeds.
If you have a DSL service, you should evaluate its performance with respect to length of your phone line from your house to the exchange.

Thanks for that, Simon.
My question was, in a sense, more general. Eircom tell me that broadband is not available to me even though I live about 4.5 km. from my local broadband enabled exchange. So my "exchange" is more distant, at about 40,000 km -- it's a satellite. I ordered it (the connection and service, not a whole satellite) from Eircom, and I am their customer, but Eircom subcontract this business to MediaSat. The system seems to perform at about 50% of its nominal rate.
I have been in touch with MediaSat, and they seem to agree I have a legitimate concern. The guy on the helpdesk could not find a quick fix, and he has promised to get back to me.

It might be worth trying TCP Optimizer, just to ensure your TCP/IP settings are optimum, especially with the huge latency in a satellite link. See SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads. I'm just guessing, though.

I had a look, but I will wait until MediaSat get back to me before I change anything. My current settings were made by MediaSat's installer, and checked twice by their helpdesk to make sure nothing had gone funny so, as of now, any problem seems to be their responsibility.
I'm supposed to get 512KB/s downloads. What I get can as high as about 400KB/s (not often) and as low as under 100 KB/s, average about 240 KB/s. For the money I am paying, it's not good value. Even if I was getting the nominal speed, it's expensive.
Thanks for your input. After years on dialup, I have to learn about this area.
Hey everybody, anymore news on this. My connection in the morning is ok but at night its bollox. I get kicked from every server I go to. I haven't had a proper game of counter strike in 2 weeks, I gotta get my fix.

Good question. My connection is just fine 9am to 4pm but 4pm to midnight is lousy. My guess? Too much traffic at night. Anyone else seeing this problem?
I actually fixed(well sort of anyway) the problem I had been having so it wasnt isp related. Seems to work fine when the cable is plugged directly in rather then the wireless link being used. Haven't checked up on what was causing the slowdown on the wireless link yet though....
