Default Eircom BB in Cavan Town

Hi Everyone,

New to the site. Found it very handy to check are you getting what you pay for.

My

Down load speed is.......1215 kbps (149 KB/s)
Upload speed.......83 kbps (11 KB/s)
QQS.......97 %
RTT........21 ms
Maxpause........143 ms

I got 2mb download 256 upload.

Is the above and average result for that kind of package? I've done it a few times and it does not really change. I'm in a new housing estate so the eircom exchange is, I was told brand new??? Or was that just sales talk.

Also I am using a Apple Powerbook with wireless extreme card? Would it be quicker If i plugged it in?

Sorry to ask such a basic question.

Anyone else in cavan got this package?

Cheers,

Jonny

Hi unclebill98

Welcome to the forum.

The Eircom Bitstream DSL product is rate adaptive which means the max speed you get depends [apart from the quality of your phone line and your general setup] on the phoneline distance to the local phone exchange.

Everything else being equal DL speeds of about 85% of the rated speed is generally considered good. On that basis a good speed for a 2Mbps package would be 1700kbps. Your speed is a little on the low side but if your distance from the exchange is high it might be the best available.

Your upload speed is quite worrying too. It's closer to the 1mbit package (128kbits up). If you're within 1km or even 2km of your exchange, you should be getting much better speeds, being honest.

However, I'm going to suggest you plug your router into your PC via 100mbits Ethernet. The problem with Wireless is that your PC -> Router ping times are slightly more than you'd get with Wired. With Wired you'd generally get less than 1ms. With Wireless it can be 1-2ms (and maybe more, and that's if your PC is right beside the router). That means the "internet" is not be sent to your PC as quickly as it would be via Wired. That can the problem with Wireless, I'm afraid. The question is though, is your Wireless operating so slow that it could be causing your speeds to decline? Try it!

But, unclebill98, don't get me wrong. Your slower connection may NOT be the result of how your PC is connected to your router. It can be various other things, such as distance from the exchange, your exchange, your own phone line, your home's internal telecom wiring, and/or even your own router. Did I leave anything out?

Let us know what your situation is, and the results of switching to Wired (should you do so).

Seifer.
