Default Outgoing Email problems - Eircon enemy action

Hi All

I'm with BT but have had several eircom.net email accounts from way back in my dialup days.

In the last couple of weeks I've been unable to send emails from the eircon accounts. I'd get a system administrator message saying mail was undeliverable. I also got a link to The Spamhaus Project which informed me that email from my ip address was being blocked.

BT TS to the rescue. Eircon have recently blocked outgoing email from their account holders who do not use Eircon as their isp.

The solution provided by BT TS is to change your outgoing mail server details to mail.iol.ie which solved the issue.

This Eircon action without warning confirms my belief that they don't care about users and reinforces my intention to get as far away from Eircon when LLU comes to my next of the woods.

This isn't a new development, Howfast. Eircom have always, to my knowledge, blocked other ISP's from their SMTP server. Therefore, if you use another ISP, replace the server with theirs, in this case mail.iol.ie. When I began to use UTV Dial-Up back in 2000, I had to change it then too, as Eircom didn't allow me access to mail1.eircom.net or mail2.eircom.net any longer.

Now whether in the last couple of years they re-allowed access, only to take it down once again just recently, I don't know. But, it certainly isn't a new thing.

Hi Seifer

I changed my isp around the same time as you did in 2000 and never had a problem with the email until a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe Eircon did't notice until now or it was because I kept my voice traffic with them. I didn't change my voice service as I feared that Eircon would ignore or delay action on any line faults [you only have to see the posts on this site to see I am not paranoid, I just prefer not to have to battle through third parties if possible].

I still have my voice traffic with Eircon so maybe they did a complete review of their systems when they updated their subscribers website recently.

Anyway notwithstanding this little hiccup with the email I am looking forward to the Bitstream speed increases due in June.

I'm with BT also and I use an eircom e-mail address with Outlook Express - I too had issues similar to yourself with outgoing mail... I was advised to change my Outgoing mail (SMTP) to mail.iol.ie - since then i had no further issues..

These are my settings below

Incoming mail POP3 mail1.eircom.net
Outgoing Mail SMTP mail.iol.ie
