Thanks, they got back to me and bluntly put it that they can only offer me 1mb even though I'm on 2mb right now :-(

I really don't understand it because when i put my line stats into this it says my line is capable of at least over 7mb with standard adsl?? When I put my neighbours phone number into irish bb's website it offers them 3mb even though they are 2miles even further away from the exchange than me.

When they do their line 'test' are they even checking my line or are they just using some outdated eircom database because even though I have eircom bb their website says I 'might' be able to get bb and the official gov website says I cant get it either! What is going on?

While rate adaption is a key to determining what speed you might be able to receive, the quality of the line you're on is also key.

However, in saying that you're on 2Mb now, I'd give Eircom a call to see if they can offer you higher speeds. Call every ISP, and see what they say. If it's good news, get back to BT and tell them they're full of crap and to do their job properly and to give you the speed that you desire.

EDIT: Don't trust ISP's online line checkers, especially UTV's. They are known to be inaccurate. For example, UTV's said I couldn't obtain broadband, but my parents' house 130km away from here could. I rang them, and they told me that it was wrong and sold me 3Mb. I'm using it now.

Do, and we'd be interested to know how you got on, so if you could post back, that'd be great.

Talking BT speed

Well, this morning BT is doing very well here in Ballina.

I have no doubts that this will go down as the day goes on. But, from scanning the posts, it all seems to go back to Eircom and their new upgrades. I don't think anyone should jump ship right now if they were happy with their provider before all this started.

Used to be that 78.16 - 194.xx were bad and 200.xx were good

It seems to have reversed.

Maybe they are fixing half the IP's at a time.

Default BT Again

Well, it dropped from there for most of the day. It was at its worst mid-afternoon, just when I was trying to update a computer. But it stayed over 500 all day for a change. I work on comuters all day, so I really enjoy the speed.

Default More Stuff

I just noticed from the tests at speedtest.net that my latency to London was in the 100's while to the Irish test spots it was in the 600's. Might want to game abroad. I don't game, but I do a lot of computer upgrades and I guess I'll just have to do the updates in the mornings for awhile.
