well...looks like i maybe the first to review the 3mb connection?!

i have signed up for it, apparently its the exact same service that eircom offer, 3mb dl, 384k upload and contended at 24:1, all for 40 euro per month.

well i'm on the BtIreland line rental and broadband package for 40euro per month (30euro without line rental). Giving 2mb speed (they just upgraded the service recently for free from 1mb) so it's only 1mb slower than the broadband plus option for 10euro less. Is it worth paying the extra 10euro for 1mb faster? I'm not convinced.

hi cookie....you were paying 30 euro per month for your 1mb connection, and you have been upgraded for free to the 2mb, but you dont think 40 euro per month is good for a 3mb line?? where else can you get an extra 1mb for 10 euro?!

dont get the logic on that one

unless you can get smart telecom (which i cannot currently get) i think 40 euro per month is good value for a 3mb/384k line.

if your downloading then you will notice a big difference, a 2mb line flat out will download at around 240KB/s, a 3MB line flat out should download around 360-370KB/s.

if you just do normal web browsing then no, you will not notice any difference and to be honest a 1 mb line will do ya. If your using voip apps like skype or doing any video conf which i will be then its worth having the extra bandwidth.

well i'd agree with you there then. Skype would definately benefit from the extra speed as would the video conferencing. Although if you could afford it this might suit you better http://www.hp.com/halo/introducing.html

the price the economist was quoting was $550,000 to create it, this includes four high-definition plasma screens. The lighting, camera angles, wall-colour, acoustics and furniture are all designed to make two Halo systems feel like a single room when linked together, and to do away with the 15 minutes of messing around usually required to set up videoconferencing gear.

plus $18,000 a room each month

Wanna split the costs with me???

Default What are you using it for?

Hey Adam,

You really need to know what you want to use broadband for to help make the best choice. I'll give you a few scenarios that may make it easier to decide...

1) Casual user who doesn't download a lot of stuff a month -> Go for their 1MB connection package.
They have a pretty good download limit, and the 1MB connection is really fast. Most of us used it for well over a year and had no complaints. This isn't great for gaming as their upload speed of 128k is a bit of a bottleneck.

2) Casual gamer, or downloads a fair bit of stuff -> Go for their 2MB connection package.
This is the package I'm currently on and I can't say I have any complaints about it. Downloads are really fast, the download limit is fine for me, and online gaming is really good on it.

3) Hardcore gamer, or people who leave downloads running over night. -> Go for their 2MB connection package.
I have just ordered this package myself as I need the better upload speed and better contention ratio (gives me higher priority over other users if the exchange is busy).
I have a few friends who use this package to download lots of TV programs, and a few other types of media which I won't mention. I need to go to this package for my gaming as it ensures I get priority over other users to guarantee I'm not effected by someone next door downloading a huge film etc.

Hope this helps some bit, I've you've a more specific question on this or anything else concerning broadband then shout.

If someone has anything else to add to this then fire away.

Mick.

Hello, I am new to the forum, so let me say hello. I have 3mgb download and 384 upload, 24:1 conten.ratio, line rental included for €50/mo for a 6 mos. contract. This week I've been crawling through the internet. I don't do games, but I do a lot of Ebay bidding. Today I checked my speed - it was 255kbps Down/32kbps up, 381down/47.7up, 555down/22up - that is 12%, 17% and 35% respectively. Does that sound good to you? I live in City Center, Crown Alley Exchange. I should be less that one mile from the central box for Eircom (lines are always bad from them, trouble for years). I tried to ring BT - but you can never never get through unless you want to spend the rest of your life on hold. I just give up. I would kill for a good isp. I just left Digiweb for similair depraved indifference to after sales service, no mattter what the sales promises are - they don't deliver. How does comreg let them get away with this?
And 3 mgb upgrade? No difference at all. Slower in fact. But it could be this area - they don't seem to want to upgrade the lines properly. I wish I knew. I'm paying plenty - getting less and less service. Love it when it works, hate it when it don't.
