Contention Ratio

I have been using Esat BT for over a year now and i have recently begun regularly testing the speed of the connection because i have noticed a drop in performance in the last two months. The download speed goes from as low as 100Kb/sec up to 1.75Mbit/sec.

Can anyone tell me where to find the contentio ratio information from Esat BT? I suspect that they have increased the number of users without any improvement in infrastructure.

I've heard un-officially from some Telecoms people that there are some exchanges in Ireland that are vastly over-subscribed, and doesn't look like there is much in the way of capacity planning to ensure they are upgraded to meet demand.

The Quality Of Service on my line is over 95% so I know my exchange is okay. I know someone in Dublin, who only gets 40% tops on their QOS (not an Esat line!).

It really can vary drastically from place to place.

childsd: I'm also with EsatBt and the service has got really slow in recent times, I've had conversations with their "tech support" and they were supposed to be getting an engineer to check the line etc, never heard any more from them after that which was about 4 months ago. Their site says the contention rate is 48:1, and from looking around at other BB providers, 48:1 is one of the highest. So I guess we suffer poor service or move to another provider. My brother just got hooked up to smart broadband, I'll see how that runs and post back here if it's significantly better, supposed to have a contention rate of 1:1, I seem to recall reading on their site.
