Default Douglas (Cork) slow connection

Hi I'm only on BT for the last 2 months. However I just noticed early this week that my speeds have dropped considerably.
Fot the last few days the fastest speed I have been getting is 150kbps, I'm on the 1Mb package. I presume this is not normal or is it?
It was sitting around the 50kpbs for a while , I'd be better off with my 3G data card, roll on HSDPA!
Anyone else have similar problems?

Thumbs down Douglas Slow Connections

When I see Douglas, I presume Douglas Cork.

Re slow connections. I have been having problems since last May.(exchange 4361) I have tried Ts with Bt but no reply. My impression is that the system cannot take the BB system. But we have no one to complain to. I believe that the Regulator has no powers in this area

Yes it's in Cork.
I tried everything:
- Plugging router directly into wall socket (bypassing filter, it's a new house with no other devices plugged in to any of the other ports.
- Switched on & off the modem
- Changed the DNS servers
- Installed different AntiVirus software on my main laptop (plus AntiSpyware)
- Tried 3 different laptops, both wired & wireless

I was talking to one of their Tech Support guys & to be honest he was not much help, nice guy but not much help. He said my line passes for 4Mb package should there shouldn't be any quality issues on the line. He said he would get someone to go check all the cards at the exchange, i.e. Eircom. No date when this would be done though.
Why did you stay with BT if it's been bad since last May? I'm seriously thinking of trying to get out of the contract (unless it improves) and going to Eircom. I know, I know wireless is probably better but I need a landline for my Sky+.
It won't work with a VOIP line nor will it work with a "mobile line" device.
Here's hoping I don't have to go to all that bother, it was fine for about 3 weeks.

Hi rebel.ranter

Sorry to hear about your woes but moving to Eircon will not solve your difficulties as BT are just reselling the Eircon product which they buy wholesale.

However, if you do decide to change please let us all know whether things improve. I would not be surprised if Eircon could fix things for their own customers that prove impossible to fix for customers of other isp's even those just reselling the Eircon product.

Hurray! It's back to full health! Proper speeds, hope they did something that leads to a permanent fix!
I had another think about it & you're right they are really only reselling. I'll give Eircon a skip.

Speeds still slow(Douglas) Max I have had over the last few days has been 1.36Mb. Certainly Ts have been no help. Some of the other forums have suggested changing Routers. Has any one tried this. OH by the way I use an Apple Mac.

Today I went and bought a Belkin ASDL Modem with High Speed Mode Wireless G Router and believe or not it has made no difference to the speed of my BB.
So all I can say is that the telephone system cannot take the BB.
At far as I can see no one is going to do anything to help us until the Regulator takes on Eircom to completely unboundle the network and let others upgrade the system. If it costs a little more,Ok, we may have a system that we pay for then.
I cannot see Eircom doing this as there is no money for them. Look what has happened over the last few years with them. The only people to benefit are the shareholders, not the users

Ellardm. Maybe try using another system on the router. Plug out your Mac completely and put it someone else's PC Laptop or Mactop (lol I know!). It's always a good idea to test the connection on more than one system when problems occur.

Also, remember what I told you before. Ring them!!! I like Howfast's idea on this. See: here. So instead of BT, you'll be going through eircom.
