Default BT 3Mb SNAILBAND Today

They're doing it again. My better half just complained that the BB was broken, no pages would open for her.

I immediately thought you must be doing something wrong but no this time it was the network. My DL speed this afternoon is an amazing 4kbps

Yes you heard correct 4kbps instead of the 2645kbps I'm used to getting. Jeez I was getting 40kbps on dialup so now my BB is 10 times slower rather than 60 times faster.

Why do I continue to pay for such a shoddy service, yea I know in Ripoff Republic there is no choice and not likely to be before I succumb to dementia and loose interest in the issue anyway. Besides no one in authority [ComReg or the Government] cares so long as the telecos can coninute to make their profits - the system works for them.

I've also just spent the last twenty minutes listening to how hard pushed BT TS are answering all our calls and will get to me when they can. Yea I'll believe that when it happens.

Rant over.

Exact same problem here in the Cork area.

Are they going to tell us that its "Eircom lines" and "out of their control" again?

Dialup was FASTER than this.

Same lark here in Tipperary. I'm on a UTV 3mb connection and getting download speeds of 1.78kbps. Looks like the same story as a few weeks ago with the Eircom exchange being at fault. Great! It took em a week to sort that out last time.

As an iol customer for 10+ years, I have to say enough is enough.
iol was "cutting edge" back in the days of dailup.
This is the worst outage I have seen in all those years.

The EsatBT takeover has led to nothing but a non functional website, billing that overcharges/sends threatening letters when they already have an online billing signup, messed up servers, and just now.. total breach of "contract".

So yes, I will look at Magnet too. Vote with your feet.

Anybody had Magnet experience in Cork? In particular switching from EsatBT and retaining an Eircom line?

"About IOL Founded in 1992, Ireland On-Line was Ireland's first Internet Service Provider"
Just like Norton/Symantec, you can buy a trade name, but you can only trade on it for so long before the cracks appear if your crap. So, yes .. <sarcasm>good job EsatBT.. </sarcasm>

I am now only worried that I will continue to be billed after cancelation for breach of contract (a legitimate reason).

Default Sympathy...no sarcasm involved

I thought I had slow speeds 'til I read some of the pieces above...I'm averaging about 1.2mbs download over the past week on whats supposed to be 6mbs. I'm not looking forward to going back to 3 mbs...

Hi m0d

Finally contacted BT TS and yes they are blaming it on an Eircon Bitstream issue. Fair play though they did log a fault on my line with Eircon and its been passed to the engineer for action [If you pay line rental to Eircon this can checked directly on the Eircon website].

The local Eircon engineer is a nice guy, yes I have met him before, and I know he visits my area on Thursdays. So I'll have to wait a few more days, but at least he's coming.

I'm hoping I'm not in the same boat as everyone else in this thread and that my speed problems are linked to an Eircon junction box on the pole supplying me, the last time I had a line fault the engineer told my before this is an old type susceptible to damp and believe it or not heavy fog can degrade the BB signal. Perhaps this time I can get the junction replaced with a decent one.

I too would like to try Magnet but a line check on their website says they "Unfortunately are unable to provide Magnet Entertainment services at this time."
So I'm stuck with the Eircon Bitstream product as there isn't even a decent Wireless isp operating in my locality.

BTW speeds recovered for a short while this afternoon but this evening I can't get better than 1Mbps.

Have just checked speed- upto 1.50Mb but uploas around 106kbps with Q/S 54%. The download has improved overnight unfortunately upload has slowed down.

The whole system is a shambles- with no help from either Ts's or the Regelator who has no power

Default The saga continues

Hi all

I'm still waiting for Eicon to sort out the problem. The local engineer did look into the matter yesterday but unfortunately he decided it was not a line fault.

Eircon customer service now say the problem has been passed to the Broadband people to look at the exchange equipment.

I heard that one before so I'm not holding my breath that I will see a resolution this side of Xmas but I will continue to hassle Eircon customer service as BT seem to wash their hand once they log a line fault for you.

We pay and they get richer. I am fed up both writing to Bt and listening to them on the phone. No response. Have tried ringing in the morning and evening just the usual platitudes and no response to emails either.

I believe that we on this forum are only a pimple on a elephant's," you know what", with our complaints.

Recently, I was a meeting and all except one had problems with the download speeds. But, many were saying even with what they had was better than dial - up.

You can all crack on about speed issues spend your lives moving from one ISP to another Nothing will change until money is invested in networks and infrustructure. While ISP's persist in trying to supply broadband on a network which is as old as the Posts and Telegraphs / RTE RELAYS which to the younger people present is now Eircom and Ntl NOTHING WILL CHANGE unless you are lucky enough to have fiber installed and have a competent ISP controlling it!!
So endth the Second Lesson!!

I agree.

However, let ComReg do something about Eircom unbundling the Lu. Then we may make progress

Hi paddyshack

While I was kind of hoping my problem was caused by a line fault [I guess we will all grasp at straws eventually] I didn’t really believe that I necessarily have bad lines. Over the last two years approx. that I’ve had BB DL speeds did not become an issue until about 6/8 weeks ago. I initially had the 2Mbps service and got a reasonably steady 1.7Mbps DL, when I got the free upgrade to 3Mbps my DL held steady at 2.57Mbps [increased to 2.65Mbps when I changed the modem setting to PPPoA].

I’m hooked up to the Crosshaven exchange and we were lucky to get the exchange DSL enabled at all so I would not expect to see fibre connections any time in the near future.

If as you suggest p2p, BT, gaming and Voip are the causing the crap DL speeds do you know anyway to detect this?

No way to detect but I work in the industry and this is a major problem on any Isp especially wireless. The only solution they can come up with is to choke the p2p etc users but this only frees up a bit of bandwidth. Until p2p bt etc is given the respect it deserves, because it is a very clever piece of software, users learn how to use it properly and ISP technology catches up then the only solution is uncontended supply.
