Default Newbie and novice needs help:(

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me understand some speed test results

Summary Last 10 Results:
Date Download Speed Upload Speed Qos RTT Maxpause
03/03/2008 21:57 544 kbps (67 KB/s) 107 kbps (13 KB/s) 34 % 51 ms 719 ms
03/03/2008 21:46 350 kbps (43 KB/s) 82 kbps (10 KB/s) 28 % 63 ms 1083 ms
03/03/2008 21:42 105 kbps (13 KB/s) 92 kbps (12 KB/s) 13 % 53 ms 2485 ms

I'm with CW and have a 2 mb package. The service seems pretty inconsistent and from what I've read about contention rates, I believe that's to be expected? I don't understand what the above results translate too .... Should I be happy with my lot, or on the phone to CW?

Any advice/direction or layman's explanation of the above would be much, much appreciated.

Thanks,

Nicole

Hi Nicole

Welcome to the forum.

Check this site for an easy explanation of the speedtest terms. Scroll about half way down the page to the Internet Speed Test Definitions section.

Hi Nicole,

2Mb translates to roughly 2000kbps. You probably shoulnt expect to get this download rate but you should expect something in the region of 1200 - 1600kbps. Your best result is 544kbps which is poor for a 2Mb connection and if it was me I would put in a complaint about it. I dont known what your upload speed is supposed to be.

The Qos is just the ratio of the lowest recorded speed during the test to the highest recorded speed. It should give you an idea of how consistant your bandwidth is. 100% is as good as it gets. Your best reading of 34% isnt great.

RTT is another term for your ping. Your results on this are pretty decent. Its measured in milli-seconds.

Max pause is also measured in milli-seconds. It is the maximum lenght of time during the test when there was no connection between you and the speed tests server. Your results here are very bad and should be less than 100ms.

Overall I think your connection is poor. Ive definitely seen and read about worse but if your not happy you should probably look around for an alternative. Hope this was some help.
