hey can any tell me the speeds upload/download i should be getting on 1mb package from bt?

Don't know what I should be getting - but test consistently shows about 850 down and 110 up - with only slight variations at different times of day. Not bad as I'm 5-6 km from exchange and never thought I'd get BB!

All things being equal, i.e good line, line distance from exchange, low attenuation, high noise margin, and good modem/router, then speeds of about 85% of the isp rated speeds are generally considered to be the best achievable.

Thus for a 1Mbps package a DL of 850kbps and UL of 110kps would be good.

I'm adding to this old thread because it addresses the very questions I am interested in. I have also got the 1mb package from BT. My line stats for download (according to BT Voyager's Configuration Manager) are
Noise Margin: 20dB (varies a little on separate readings)
Line Attenuation: 59 dB (seems never to vary)
Output Power: -1.4 dBm (varies a little)
Line Rate: 832 Kbs (never varies)

I know that I am 5.7 km from my exchange.

I have the impression that the line rate reported by the modem is, in effect, the best-possible performance rather than actual performance at any given time.

Irish ISP Test has reported download speeds ranging from over 800 kb/s to under 400 kb/s -- average a little over 600 kb/s.

Should I shrug my shoulders and say that's about as good as I can hope for until the next great leap forward in technology or infrastructure? At least it beats dialup.

As the others said, it will vary.

When you are running the test make sure that your email client and any other software that could be using your connection is not running, as that will obviously affect your results.
