Default Accuracy Of Speed Test

As a long-time user and admirer of www.irishisptest.com I ifeel I must point out the following. I'm on NTL 6 Meg and on the last two tests I carried out I achieved speeds of 2.95 MB. However, when going to, say, Apple - iPod + iTunes and downloading the iTunes software as a test, my download speed is 720 KBps. If you multiply that by by 8 it works out at 5.76Mbps. Any ideas folks?

Default bits and Bytes

Just to state the obvious,
the 2.95Mb was Mega bits per second
while the 720KBps is kilo Bytes per second.

There are 8 bits in a Byte

And to state the even MORE obvious 720 KiloBYTES x 8 = 5760 KiloBITS or 5.76 Megabits? Understand now?

22 hops in total - Dublin; London; Amsterdam; NYC; Chicago; Denver.

Just did the speed test again and got 1.9 Megs on www.irishisptest.com, but the transfer rate is showing rock solid at 720 Kbps or 5.76 Megs . Does that help?

Your download speed should be fine for chatting on skype but the upload
needs to improve. I reckon thats where the problem is. And your max pause is
off the charts - its almost 16 seconds for one of your tests! The ping (RTT)
should probably be less than 100ms too.

Who is your provider?

What does max pause and the ping mean?

Well I am with Imagine and I am getting 1.76Mbps down.(2Mbps bb) That is good considering I am close to the end of the 4km line. (Always allow 20% loss).

People lets not get confused here between Bytes and Bits. There are 8 bytes to a bit. Therefore 1762 kbps = 216 KB/s.

Anyone know how to do a Sync test on a Belkin wireless router??

I suggest you take your own advice and maybe just check some VERY basic facts before replying in future. There are 8 bits in a byte - not the other way round as you describe.

Have a look here:How many bits in a byte

It might clear things up for you.
