Default speed test

I have having trouble with the accuracy of the speed test. For example it is currently reporting approx 1mb/s although i have got just under 300kb/sec downloading a file from ftp.esat.net. That is over 2mb/s Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Eoin

I presume you are with with BT, if so are you on Option 1 ,2 or 3.

The DL speed displayed in the dialog box from ftp.esat.net is measuring in kilobytes per sec. To get the equivalent to the speedtest divide the result by 8 [ there are 8 bits in a byte].

If you have option 3 then 300KB/s is not too bad though you should expect at best 325 KB/s.

Doing the math it looks as if you are reporting option 1 speed on the speedtest and option 3 speeds on the ftp DL.

Have you tried test at different times of the day. Could the issue be contention? Don't forget the connection to ftp.est.net does not have to hop across the internet so you would expect higher speeds in any case. BT use this test to show your line is getting the proper speed from their server and that getting lower speeds otherwise is caused by general net congestion and not their connection to you.

I'm actually with UTV Internet, I'm in kildare town area. Subscribed to 3mb package contention is rated 24:1
I just seem to get higher reading from ftp.esat.net on downloads than irishisptest.
