Default 3, O₂, Vodafone…

Hi people,

Has anyone had any experience with any of the mobile broadband operators (3 O₂, Vodafone)? They promise great things…I'd like to connect my desktop PC using them if they're any good. They're a little pricey initially, so I want to make sure they're worth it before trying them!

Also, any ideas of any upload speeds? Do they work in linux?

be very wary of them all! the speeds advertised are if you alone are using with perfect weather etc! but even at the best of times there will be almost 50 others on same line. costs are attractive only because the services are so unpredictable and my best from "3" was under 100kbps at night(early morning) average speeds i got was 10-35kbps and that was in centre of carlow with excellent coverage but no service and NO RESPONSE from customer care! i see three tech dept are answering all customer care phones now??? haha but they still giving the same LAME responses!

Default 3 ireland service

Dont know about vodafone or o2 but be aware that the 3 service has virtually collapsed. Go to boards.ie to see the comments of hundreds of dissatisfied customers. There you will see that some people are considering legal action against them. My experience is that it is totally unreliable even when you have a perfect signal. Frequently it doesnt work at all and when it does it is about the same speed as dial-up

its all about where you live and the signal you get as my problem seemed to be the number of older buildings around me but your gonna get that in most areas! also it is worth trying it out as they do have a 14day return period so if it doesn't work give it back withiout penalty or charges. not sure if others have a return policy if it doesn't work?

yes i believe they do but be aware that they are only concerned with selling you something and have heard they boost results in some stores and in other stores they say they cant do demo! obviously if they did it would show very poor results?

This is true! Though if they've done all that and still have relatively poor results, then I can be sure their product is bad!

Thanks again everyone!

what i mean is they are all trying to sell the product and the good thing with three is you have 14 days to return it if you find its not working out for you! im sorry but i dont know if Vodafone or o2 have similar policies but that is something you can find out in store and as for carphone warehouse i'm barred from their Carlow branch for returning a phone so will make no further comment on them!!

Lol - that's something of an achievement there! I've heard of people being banned from pubs, but never a mobile phone shop!

I think I'll wander down and see what's on offer on Monday. I'm glad about the 14 days thing - maybe the other operators will follow suit?

I'm with 3G.
i had problems when I first tried to install it, apparently it has huge problems with Dell computers running Windows Vista. I had to uninstall "Roxio" and then disable via msconfig a lot of startup options. It worked then after being on the phone for an hour with tech service. That was after I ran their customer service in India about 5 times.

Ok so I did a Irish ISP test on 3 last night and got over 1.1MB/s download! Rally fast, but in reality if I download a file from the net it goes about 126kb/sec, which isn't bad really.

I have no other option with broadband so 3, o2, or vodaphone was my only choice, and i opted for 3 as it's only 20 euro a month. That's a fiver a week which is absolutely nothing when you think about it.

The modem was 130 euro initially but i got it for 99 as I used be a student. Although i am not a student anymore, the guy insisted he give me the discount anyway. This was at the 3G store on Patrick's Street, Cork.

wow thats much faster than most people have been getting and surely they could have explained all the vista problems to other people with the same speed problem? reality is that they were swamped with new customers and couldn't cope and that situation is very likely to reccur again and again as the oversubscribing wears out their servers etc.

Well I hear some consumer watchdog are investigating 3G so maybe that will give them a font up the hole and get them to get a decent service.

As I said though, It's only costing me a fiver a week for internet access in my bedroom.
Plus you can take your modem abroad to any country 3G operates in and surf the net there too for no extra charge,

some of the advertising does need to be looked at, noticed one shops advert for three where they forgot to includ the "up to" part before mentioing the speed

Talking

the sad thing is that some(very few) people do actually get speeds above 1mbps with o2 vodafone and "3" 3g data modems but unless you are living/using it in those places you wont experience much better than download speeds which get further reduced by a whopping 48:1 contention

Default Changes Afoot With "3"

IT SEEMS THREE HAVE NOW SWITCHED TO USING VODAFONE'S PRICING STRUCTURE FOR THEIR CRAP MOBILE BROADBAND SERVICE! they now charge a reasonable 49cent/mb if you do not avail of a bundle. but they have cut off the month which they had given me for free grrr and they are still stalling on the phones claiming to be technical support etc must ask them about compensation for the time i had no broadband after they deleted my age verification!lol BEWARE OF "3"

I have been with o2 broadband for the last 6 weeks. on the test on this web site i got 1.7 mps but when i download files it does 2mb per minute. I live in a very rural area in kildare and have no other option for broadband. i am very happy with o2 broadband speed and their service. When ever I phone o2 they are polite, they want to resolve my problems and never had to wait too long on the phone.
I'm sure in time when eircom get their ass into gear after the company has been broken up the broadband speed will improve a great deal.
