Default External Hard Drives

What's the General Opinion on External Hard Drives? I do a bit of Video Editing - Transferring old video tapes to DVD etc. The files are pretty big and as I have an 80G HDD I thought that I might just ship them off to an External where they can reside until I might recall them at some point(or not) in the future. In case family/friends might think that I should convert their tapes - I was contemplating a 250G external - (files can be up to 7/8Gb) Any thoughts? Maxtor/Seagate/Western Digital? Other?

I have 4 x USB2 hard drives on my media centre computer. 1 is a 160gb drive that came with the computer and the other 3 are drives that I had laying around and bought cases for. The 3 I bought cases for are Western Digital 200gb drives. I bought 3 x Canyon external slimline drive cases which do a great job. They are quiet for a start which is a big plus and they also keep the drives well enough cooled to stop any heat related problems.

This is the case I bought and can highly recommend if you either have spare drives laying around or find that it's cheaper to buy the drive and case compared to a ready built drive:

I use the drives for storing home movies on from my VHSC camcorder and my DV camcorder. Some files are around 12gb and transfer speeds are good enough for my liking. It's also very handy if you want to move between computers as it quickly installs.

Regards...
Tom

Thanks for that Tom. I'll probably just go for one of the ready-made jobs. just doing some price research now on Komplett and www.elara.ie. I don't intend to rely on an external HDD for the day-to-day running of my PC. It'll (initially) be just a place to park stuff!

Thumbs up

More than welcome . I find the USB drives great for being able to transport stuff from computer to computer... be it in my home or at a mate's or family member's house.

Good luck with whatever you decide to purchase and let us know how things go.

Regards...
Tom
