Hey,

Ping, (in my limited understanding) is the time in miliseconds that it takes for you to send a piece of very short imformation to the server and the server to send it back to you.

Edit: I also meant to say that a lower is better

According to Wiki:

"Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. Ping works by sending ICMP “echo request” packets ("Ping?") to the target host and listening for ICMP “echo response” replies (sometimes dubbed "Pong!" as an analog from the Ping Pong table tennis sport.) Using interval timing and response rate, ping estimates the round-trip time (generally in milliseconds although the unit is often omitted) and packet loss (if any) rate between hosts."

Yeah, something like "The Hunt For Red October"

Captain Ramius: Re-verify our range to target... one ping only.

Capt. Vasili Borodin: Captain, I - I - I just...

Captain Ramius: Give me aping, Vasili. One ping only, please.

Capt. Vasili Borodin: Aye, Captain.

Ah great stuff

Speaking of pings lately I've tried to run the ping command through command prompt and hasn't worked. I'm running on XP Pro, and the command prompt has always given problems. the default line at the start is my username, which I think is unusual. Any one got any ideas?

Yeah... dunno myself. I tried the following commands just for a bit of craic and what happens is my CPU maxs out and nothing happens and command prompt freezes, needing a Task Manager executed kill to stop it!

c:\documents and settings\username> ping rte.ie
c:\documents and settings\username> ping google.com
c:\documents and settings\username> tractert rte.ie
c:\documents and settings\username> tractert google.com

Sucks cause I ain't getting any response. I think if i could get the default to

c:\>

Then I might get a response to the command! Maybe !

Edit: Found this might help Command prompt reset, how-to got it back to the default but still ain't getting any where except for an "Illegal Operation" warning!
