Default Gmail rubbish recently

Hey,

I've been hav'in major major problems with Gmail recently.

Operations are slowed to dial-up speeds 20% of the time and 75% of they just time out and don't complete at all!

Anyone know of any solutions?

I've been doing the following;

1) Using ff 2.0 with greasemonkey disabled
2) Using thunderbird with gmail POP3 to get my email (less than ideal but no choice left)
3) IE7 and Opera both have same problem!

Is this happening to you regardless of where you connect from?

Which ISP are you using?

I've been using a BT 3Mb service from Ranelagh.
-Its been good enough, but not great.

I'll be on a Digiweb 3Mb later today in Limerick, I'll give it a go then.
-Its always been excellent.

I'm here in Wexford and I'm having the same trouble. Really hit and miss if I can get into my mailbox at all. For last couple of days it's being telling me that I've been entering wrong password/username (I haven't.). I'm on BT 3MB and using Explorer 7 , (Vista Home Premium) on a new computer. I was blaming Explorer 7 or Vista as I never used it before Sunday when I set up new computer. Prior to that I used Explorer 6 on XP Home and never had any bother with Gmail.

Angry Its a Gmail / High Ping Problem

Well it's def a pseudo-ISP issue;

Was in Limerick on a Digiweb 3Mb and new interface worked as sweet as a nut.

Then returned to BT 3Mb and it sucks on the new version so had to go back to the old one.

Personally I think that the new code doesn't take slow pings into effect and alot of the simple op's are timing out. I think Gmail should be able to fix it though with time. Either that or they can sort out sasanach BT!
(Apologises if my Gaeilge is off!)

I've been using Gmail and the Gmail Notifier without any problems for a long time. No timeouts, and it's usually speedy enough. I'm in Tralee using BT's 3mb, and I also use it in Shannon, using BT's 1mb.

You should check to make sure you're using the correct DNS servers for your connection (either configured within your router [set to seek automatic or manually entered] or within your Windows LAN TCP/IP settings [entered manually]).

The BT Broadband DNS addresses are:

Primary - 192.111.39.1
Secondary - 192.111.39.4

Hope the problem is resolved soon.

Seifer.

Default Which ports to block to stop torrents / p2p?

Thanks for the DNS addresses!

Just changed them - might help.

However I found out this morning that some one on the wireless network had been running several torrent files 24/7 (@130-150kbps) - not a happy bunny when I found this out! Lagging disappeared straight after torrents were stopped.

In any case, I've a router that allows me to block ports... so what I might do it block all torrent ports and leave normal ports open. Normal ports to allow email / internet / chat programs etc open..

Does anyone know what port ranges I should block to stop torrents / p2p being run?

Cheers.

I don't think simply blocking ports will stop torrents, as they can use pretty much any port. On my "improved" LinkSys WRT54G there are a few options to block based on protocols and types of traffic OR to use QoS to give browsing / email / SSH higher priority. It used to be a serious issue a few months ago as I was sharing a connection with a couple of leechers!

Thank god you've never shared a connection with me!

You're right though, they can use a range of ports as specified by the individual user. The only thing I'd say is to activate your router's firewall if any, and remove any port forwards for any torrent clients that have been entered into the permissions.

Hope you get it sorted.

Found something else that main the Gmail experience a little better.

I had a addon running "FasterFox", its a pipe-laying program. Disabling it seems to help a little.
