Lanline Limitations vs ADSL Speed I need to decide whether or not to switch my ISP.
I'm finding difficulty in deciding due to 3 factors:
(1)The bewildering speed claims made by a number of ISP's
(2)Understanding the physical limitations of my landline
(3)Understanding the limitations of the ISP .
My ISP seems to be doing their best to solve my connectivity & slowspeed problems but since I am not technically educated I can't really measure the truth of what I'm being told.In recent 3 way contacts between Eircom,my ISP,and myself I get the impression there is an ongoing blame game-Eircom vs ISP as to who is to blame for the problems.
Eircom state the lack of ISP server capacity is at the root of the poor speed problem. This was said when I told the telephone engineer that prior to 6/8 months ago I was getting between 600~850 Kbts/sec(1Mg ISP limit),sometimes exceeding 900Kbts during daytme hours. He also rubbished the ISP's contention that neighbour's logging on in the evening in a split line marginal broadband area(i.e. circa 3/4 klms from enabled exchange Blarney,Co Cork) is the cause. The engineer tellingly stated neither my line nor the lines in my neighbourhood are split-they are dedicated into the exchange, and that physical line capacity is unrelated to broadband volume demand-the single important factor affecting performance is distance from the exchange;that if I was getting better speeds than presently(145evenings~725,mornings),as far as Eircom is concerned,Ishould still be @ that level.
My ISP is replacing(free) their router to improve connectivity.
Anyone out there care to comment, advise?
