Nortons software is quite good, it's just that most people are not willing to spend money on a very good anti virus system (norton) - so they do the next best thing. They get a good free anti virus system (avg/avast).
None of the anti virus programs are major resourse hogs provided you're running a pc that is in anyway decent (an average 5 year old pc is still fine)

Well after reading your thoughts on Norton(that I disagreed with )I decided to go searching for reviews.
It appears you are correct,Norton has improved significantly this year.
I still remain a very satisfied user of Kaspersky though.
i use avast 4.7 and it is brilliant i was a AVG devote and recommended to lots of people the only thing I found with it was the Def updates where getting very big especially if u r on dial up......
I am Avast all the way it uses very little memory unlike the crappy Norton and Mcafee products its all good
I've used Kaspersky for a few years now and it's terrific, it's user-friendly and does the job well. NOD32 is awkward for the average user. AVG Free combined with Ad-Aware and Spybot can be an excellent combination.
Have been a big fan of kaspersky for a long while but have since switched over to norton when i installed vista. Norton used to be a system hog but them seem to have trimed the fat and it runs well along side some extra spyware protection
I currently have Vista 64bit and got Macfee free with the laptop. I see memebers talking about AVG/Avast. I thought that you need a firewall and Anti-virus. I was under the impression Macfee was the firewall, even though i have heard the Vista firewall is more then enough? is this correct and if so, do you know if Vista and AVG/AVAST are compatable.
I use AVG and Zone-Alarm on XP and never have problems. The only problem im finding latley is with AVG, that it is updateing almost everyday, which never happend before.
I used to use AVG and in the past also used Avast 4.7. Both work well, but the on-access scanning is overly intensive (I've got a nice dual core 64x2 4400+, 2 gig ram and a very clean system on boot - so load of resources free).
Then i found Conodo - I now use their firewall and virus scanner - both are free, very effective and always uptodate. A quick scan of this topic didn't reveal anyone mentioning comodo - which is a odd as they are one of the largest and most well know free firewall providers.
Their Firewall, Anti Virus (with HIPS) works really well together. Its not a resource hog and just does the job nicely in the background.
I work on several large and small networks around Dublin and use NOD32... Brilliant ... except for one thing, clients cant be monitored or scanned from a central location, but they say they are working on it .... looking forward to the new suite (system works). another product to fight againt the norton virus that is pre-installed on so many computers.
I have used 'stopsign' now for years and find it brilliant. (eAcceleration Corp. - Home) Just a small annual fee to pay for total protection and automatic upgrades daily. It sits on the toolbar and never needs access.
I use Nod32 on most of my the computers in the house and AVG on a few of the laptops and 1 or 2 computers. Both have worked fine for me for a long time and I've never had a virus yet. Personally I wouldn't touch Norton and the likes with a bargepole... but that's my opinion
Regards...
Tom
I disagree, I think Norton have written one of the best pieces of software around, and it's free from the site. It's a little tool to remove all traces of norton from your computer

Well I know the the latest ver:avg75iswt_467a1005 is Vista compatible. AVG updating itself is not a problem. It depends, if McAfee is a security suite or just an anti virus program, If it is the security suite it has a firewall. You can get all 3 on their own or together.
I downloaded Norton 360 a few months ago.
I have never had so many 'programme not responding' messages since and at times, the whole lot just slows down to a crawl.
Has anybody else had this problem?
I got fed up with Nortons huge amount of processes and freezing on updates and just use AVG with Comodo firewall now. No problems as yet. Replaced Norton with AVG/Comodo on mother and sisters laptops and they're both running much faster now.
I actually use Norton 2005. I have bought and paid for Norton 2006 and 2007. But it is totally crap! It takes over my computer and slows it down to a snails pace. This CCAPP (norton uses) takes so much from my computer that it has crashed (just stopped) during game play. Sending and receiving mail was a total pain. (ok I looked into it and you can turn it off and I did) But the one thing I hate about Norton the most is. It will detect a Virus but it wont actually FIX it. Rant over hehehe

Are they still releasing updates to the definitions for Norton 2005?
