Default Which Anti-Virus Software Do You Use?

If you are using Windows you should have some form of anti-virus software installed.

What are your preferences?

Vinnie - What kind of price is Sophos? I've always had the impression that it was very expensive

I'm using Avast, like it's free with free updates. I have been using for 2 and half years without a hitch, throughly recommend it. I have helped people recover from virus infections and would advise all to avoid Norton and McAfee like a plauge(Pun intended) Probably the best feature I have found in Avast is the update system, as soon as it recognises an internet connection it checks for an update.

Many AV softwares do this including Nod32.

I use Nod32 on most of my the computers in the house and AVG on a few of the laptops and 1 or 2 computers. Both have worked fine for me for a long time and I've never had a virus yet. Personally I wouldn't touch Norton and the likes with a bargepole... but that's my opinion

Yes mate I have the free version installed on the rigs that have AVG installed. I would also recommend that you have several spyware/adware/malware scanning programs installed and uptodate. Try spybot search & destroy along with Adware as previously suggested by Cookie. Also worth looking at the likes of Spyware Blaster & Spyware Guard. I usually find that one program will miss a few bits, but it will always be picked up by the next program.

I was using Norton, but have only just today switched to Avast! 4 Home Edition. It certainly has a much smaller memory footprint than the Norton product (about 14MB for all the modules, compared to over 40MB with Norton - including the liveupdate stuff), but no idea how good it really is. But then it's free. I was thinking of looking at AVG, but I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between it and Avast.

Also using SpyBot S&D and AdAware SE Personal.

Default It worked

Hi thanks for the reply about the spyware blaster and adaware i am delighted that it seems to have taken care of the problem. Dell wanted me to pay 80 euro to fix the prob and when i said i was broke the guy said how about 50 then lol. I have been advised to reinstall windows after backing up my stuff. Does anyone see any probs with this? Thanks again.

What you should do before doing a reinstall is switch of System Restore and then reboot your computer. The reason being that you find 'nasties' hide themselves in the files created for System Restore and they will stay there until the restore points are removed. Once you have done that you can switch System Restore back on and make a clean restore point which you can revert to should the need arise.

No real point reinstalling unless you really need to in all honesty and a lot of support desk people will advise a reinstall to save time and effort in my experience.

Once you have a healthy clean system, you could always use a system imagin program to make an image of your system which you can store on disk so that should the need arise, you can do a quick and painless image restore of your system.

Hope this helps.

Regards...
Tom
