Default Eircom 2Mb=269Kb/sec.

Is anybody having the same problem as me Eircom tell me there is nothing wrong with my line and I should be getting 1700+ kb/sec from my 2MB home plus, and there is a problem with my computer which is brand new, I only get those speeds at 3am in the morning, the rest of the time I'm getting around the 250/300KB/sec, now I know nothing about this subject except why does it work a 3am, well I would guess it's because I'm the only person up at that time using the line, am I alone on this or is it really my PC with the problem, anybody in the same boat, please reply.

i know there is a way to check your line stats like what it is capable of just dont know how but maybe someone else can advise? sounds very like a contention problem as you get good speeds at off-peak times so there are probably too many people in same area or using same line?

Just to rule out unauthorised wireless usage, if your router is a Wi-Fi router or you have a wireless access point, have a quick check at the activity LED to ensure no one is using your wireless connection, i.e. this should not be continuously blinking. Alternatively, run the speedtest with the wireless disabled during the test.

I am experiencing a similar issue with Eircom's broadband speed in our office. We have a 4Mbps Eircom broadband connection and generally we get 3.4Mbps during the morning, but in the afternoon, this speed typically falls to below 1Mbps and typically varies between 300kbps and 2Mbps all the way to late in the evening. At this time of writing, I get 1.08 Mbps down, 300kbps up, QoS of 45%, jitter of 4.2ms, max delay of 728ms.

You can check your DSL line statistics by going into your router's web interface, then into "Expert Mode", click "Yes" and then on the left section click "Statistics" and then "DSL". This shows the maximum downstream and upstream throughput. This should match what you are subscribed to, e.g. 2048 for a 2Mb connection.

Thanks for the replys, all those tests have been ruled out today spent an hour on the phone with Eircom, they believed spyware was causing the problem, they say my line is perfect it's just been put down 3 months ago, after ruling out spywear my windows live one care was not good enough for them to rule it out, so downloaded their adware test and finding nothing wrong,
they are sending out a technition to the local exchange to fix the prob, if that works I'll let you know, would be worth a phone call to sort this out.

Unhappy I give up.

The problem has been fixed thanx, yes this is what eircom have no told me, except now I'm getting 137kbps out of my 2MB pack lol, I have to laugh or I will cry theres no winning here at all, why can I not get it into their heads that there service is awful, I've looked at other posts here and I am far from alone, this is it, take it or leave it they don't give a dam, they take my money! and give me the useles service that I am now going to have to except until they get a good kick in the ass, thats it I'm stuck like the rest of us put up or shut up, so I now have the option of cancelling my broadband they know I wont do that, nobody would it would be horrid without even this bad bad service, OH why don't I live in any other country other than this capitalist hellhole that would put even America to shame, and I am not even a socialist.
Thanx for listening, stumped and waiting for a real ISP who wants our business, so we can free ourselves of this crap.

Hi.

Get somone with a laptop to come to your house and do a speed test along side your new pc. If he/she gets the same speed then its more than likely that Eircoms contention ratio on your line is being used to the max. I think the ratio is 33:1 on the 2meg package. So there could be 33 computers sharing that 2meg connection from the exchange. Thats why you are getting a fast speed at 3am. If your friends laptop attains a much higher speed than your new pc then your looking at a software problem. I presume its Vista since its a new PC. Try uninstall Norton or any other add on virus software and check your speed. You dont need Norton as windows defender is excellent. You also dont need norton firewall as vista has its own, I think.

Regards,

Dec.

Thx for your input, Dmannix, I have tried witout antivirus nothing changed, yes it is vista and has a firewall and windows defender, is windows defender also antivirus, I didn't think it was, maybe it is that would save a few euros thx again, my brother brought down his pc and got the same speeds as me, 324kbps down now 211kbps up, round trip 72ms max delay 48ms max route speed 7.28mbps. TCP forced idle 0%, now that the Easter holidays are over things have improved now get 1750kbpb except from 4pm till midnight lol thats when I want to use it, yes I think it has to be contention issues here my 2Mb pack has a 48:1 ratio, I was wondering I did ask eircom but didn't get an answer can they not up the output when they go over 48 ppl, lol that sounds too easy, still bummed here.
