It depends on the kind of file i use, for music winamp, for most video you cant beat PowerDVD 6 (not 7.0 it doesnt work with Divx) , its audio output on surround beats every players. But for ultimate compatibility you cant go wrong with VLC player

VLC is fairly class, can open anything. Windows media player just wrecks my head - dodgy ugly interface, lacks imagination.
I use Nero Showtime a bit, its fairly ok - I think it's a re-branded powerdvd/intervideo app tho. iTunes is great for MP3s too, just nice and simple if you want it to be.

I use WMP 11 with the 5.1 surround sound plugin and find it great. I use PowerDVD for Movies, I don't tend to watch a lot of them on my PC.

Anyone tried Media Player Classic? Comes bundled with the K-Lite Codec Pack (which has some pretty handle little programs if you use video alot), very nice system. Much like VLC.

Also since I'm sure alot of ye would like to know a good (not excellent) converter thats free check out: SUPER , handles nearly every codec and format.

Default quicktime? iTunes?

you should have quicktime in there. Quicktime Pro is very very good and beautifully integrated into Final cut pro for any media mongrels out there!

I just use WMP11 and I have gone to free-codecs.com to get the latest xp compatible packages(K-Lite) for both video and audio, just pick what suits you and you can customize WMP to play what you want or use the classic version, basically VLC but updated.

Yes that might be slightly true but that is a Micro$oft program and that means all the problems that come with that

VLC is simple and will work with pretty much anything

Windows - Media Player 11. I tried VLC but it hangs (on my system) on about 30% of the files I try to play.
Linux - MPlayer. What fun that was to setup. Not.

I use Windows Media Player, version 11 is class. Love the look of it. Often use iTunes too, very handy the way it organises all the music for you so its easy to play
