Default irish dsl speeds

why is it that irish adsl maximum speeds seem to be limited to 3mb compared to up to 24mb in rest of europe!?
For example utv internet offer a max of 8mb in northern ireland while their max here is 3..why?

Hi eoin

Welcome to Ripoff Republic. Most adsl services in this country are dependent on the Eircon Bitstream product because the government won't force Eircon to let competition into the market by opening up LLU.

Now we all know that the Eircon shareholders must get maximum returns on their investment. So why should Eircon provide a decent BB service at reasonable prices when you can sell a second/third rate service at inflated prices without any interference from anybody including the Irish government.

Before you say what about ComReg, well what about ComReg - according to their latest report they're considering what to do next because Eircon are resisting LLU. If Eircon's reaction to ComReg in the recent SMART customer disconnections situation is anything to go by I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any change in the Irish BB market anytime soon.

There is a very good reason for that. Nobody. Cares.
There are perhaps a few hundred folks in the whole of ireland who fight for their rights. A fair chunk of those people are on this forum, posting their dissatisfaction with the general situation.
Comreg have proven that they know:
1) How the public feels about the situation
2) That the public COULD actually vote to have them shutdown, if they knew how
3) They won't be forced to take a stand on the Eircom situation while yes-men are calling the shots in Government.

The rights of a consumer are surprisingly high in Ireland, but the average person who actually KNOWS their rights and are prepaired to use them are shockingly low.

Back home, there is a similar organisation to Comreg, and not only do they have teeth, they welcome the public's criticism when they fail. ComReg threatens private individuals that call their actions into question.

Default Slightly off topic but ....

I know this post is a tad off topic. However, it has to do with dsl/adsl speeds in this wee Republic of ours. I am with BT and as soon as they get their act together and actually downgrade me the better. I was on their so called premium package option 3 paying silly amounts of money a month for the honour of a decent net connection. I needed the faster option because I was getting hammered on xbox live. There is nothing more annoying than losing a game online due to 'Lord Lag.' Unfortunately, everyone else on the net seems to have a much faster/fatter net connection than me so even though my scores improved I was still getting hammered in a one on one situation. So, I'm downgrading my line again and when my xbox live sub comes up for renewal in March, I'll nae be renewing for the honour of getting hammered in game again. I'll stay a silver a/c user until the speeds in this country increase and the tarrif drops! At least I can still update my games etc and still have a net connection faster than dial up.
