Default Irish Broadband told me this test won't work??

Hi All!
Was on to Irish Broadband support about my speeds being all over the place and the guy told me this test won't be accurate at all because of the way their system works! Is this true?By the way I'm on 3mb fixed wireless.

Most tests work by seeing how long it takes to transferr a file of known size. This is used to check the real speed of a connection.

Irish broadband are trying to con you by telling you this. They are not going to admit that it's your connection that's at fault. they'll say the test is at fault and don't believe it.

Tell them that you have tested it with 4 different types of test

Flash
Java
Direct file download

and then ask them why at one time it will download 10Mb in 5 mins and the next day the same download takes twice as long. I bet they'll come up with another excuse so that it's not their fault.

A pretty good test as an alternative to Java based testing for measuring the downlink is to try downloading the 15Mb test file from the following link:
BT Openworld

When the transfer is around 90% complete, take note of the transfer rate. Then multiply this by 8 and devide the result by 1024 to get your effective speed in Mbps. For example, I typically get 321KB/s on my Digiweb 3Mb DSL link, which gives (321 x 8) / 1024 = ~2.51Mbps.

I have to say, I'm on IBB 1Mbps ADSL, and they've been pretty much spot on. Don't forget that wireless is inherently unstable - you're relying on line-of-sight and good weather conditions, and are subject to other RF interference, so you won't always get the best connection. Also, the further you are from the tower, the slower your connection will be simply because the signal dissipates as it travels away from the mast.

I was on Ripwave once. Despite getting full signal strength and quality (5x5, as they say), I couldn't even connect. In short, stay away from Ripwave!

However, this site and others like it are pretty accurate with their calculations. If IBB are trying to tell you that any online speed test is wrong, they're leading you down the garden path…

They will tell you anything you want to hear. But why worry about line of sight ,weather, flocks of seagulls etc. I was with them for a year and changed to another provider, as they never even tried to fix my .09 kb line. Do yourself a favor and get a provider that does not give you excuses as to why they are not keeping up the speeds they promised.

the best thing you can do is to document everything including speed test results and send them all to the company in emails! they may ignore one or two but when you send a report to them every week they know you are serious! remember to save your sent emails!!

also email ComReg and offer them all your speed test results and ask if they can intervene with your provider on your behalf.

then contact the A.S.A.I. using your results as proof that the company are not providing the speeeds they advertised so they are falsly advertising a product!
