A trouble ticket is just the reference number generated by their call logging software when you log a call with the support team. The ticket is closed when the agent dealing with your call belives that they have provided a response to your query. It doesn't necessarily mean that the problem itself has been resolved.

In my case I've tried everything I can to rule out a hardware or software problem on my side. I've tried with different computers connected directly to the IBB ethernet connection. I've tried with different routers. I've even booted from a Linux live-cd and tested it from there. They all report the same problem - the upload portion of my connection is rubbish.

I've done a traceroute to the DNS server, and from what I can see the problem lies with the machine just before the DNS server (IP: 62.231.52.157). On the traceroute it frequently times out and seems to be creating a bottleneck in the connection, though I can't be 100% sure of this as I don't have any in-depth details of the IBB network topology.

If I were you, I'd run frequent speed tests and keep a record of your results. With a 2mb connection you should be receiving close to 250 KiloBytes per second transfer rates.

Just got back from my parents place and checked my connection speed - same problem as before - not that I expected IBB to fix it over the Christmas period. I'll be calling them again tomorrow to see if they have any news for me.

Had an IBB engineer out today to run some tests. Confirmed that my download connection is ok, but that my upload connection is "unstable". Looks like they're going to switch me to another high-site, as the one I'm currently connected to is a bit on the distant side.

Looks like my ongoing saga with IBB is finally coming to an end.

An engineer called around on Friday, ran some tests, and set me up to connect to another high site, but it didn't resolve the problem. My upload connection is still unstable and frequently drops.

After a lot of coming and going, the engineer called IBB premium support and spoke to them for a while. He gave me his mobile and let me talk to the tech support guy myself. Basically I was told that IBB could not guarantee my connection and that I should look for another provider as there is nothing they could do to resolve the problem.

I find this strange as I had a rock solid connection for over a year on the 1Mbps connection, and my problems only started after they upgraded their 1Mbps customers to 2Mbps.

Normally, I would have argued the point and insisted that as a paying customer they do something about it, but this problem has been ongoing for the past 2 months, and I'm fed up of it. I've agreed that they can take out the equipment in 28 days. In the meantime I've signed up with Digiweb.

Incidentally, the engineer who called told me that the new high site they connected me to was experiencing problems due to interference - interference which was being caused by one of their own transceivers. Apparently the transceiver used for ripwave connections is too close to the one used for breeze connections.

I'm not sure if I believe this or not, but at this stage, I'm past caring. Up until this problem surfaced, I was happy to recommend IBB, but not anymore.

So for anyone based in Limerick, if you're connected to the Clarion high site and are experiencing problems with your connection, don't expect IBB to resolve the issue.

I've signed up for Digiwebs wireless service. I live in rented accomodation and a phone line is out of the question for me, so wireless is my only option.

That a pain. I had a look at the digiweb wireless offering, U dont get very much for your money. 128kbit up 1mb down with only 10gb. Not much better than what u was getting with IBB. But if its stable then i guess u had no option.

For the same cost as IBB's standard 2Mbps package, Digiweb offers 3Mbps down and 512Kbps up. They do apply a transfer quota of 30GB per month, which I'm not too happy with, but as you said, my options are limited.

Given that IBB were unwilling to do anything else to resolve my problem, I'm glad to be rid of them. From speaking with the engineers that called out, it looks like I'm not the only one having this type of problem, which makes me wonder how many others are experiencing this kind of issue, but either haven't contacted IBB or are unaware that this is an issue.

From my own experience, IBB don't want customers like me. Customers who know what they're doing and will raise a fuss when they are not getting the service they pay for. It was IBB after all who told me that I should change providers, and they wanted to take out the equipment that day. When you see a company telling you that they no longer want your custom, you know there is something drastically wrong. All I can say is that I'm glad that I'm moving away from them. Digiweb can't be any worse.
