Default 2.4 mbps meant to be 3mbps

hello all,
Im just wondering what to do in my situation.
I have ordered a business service connection of dsl from Irish Bb at 3mbps, but the test only comes in at 2.3 / 2.4.
A contention rate of 48:1 also, which isnt too bad and I dont think there are many people around me at all with broadband.

What should I do?

cheers,

Y

Hi yeager

The maximum DL speeds obtainable on a DSL connection depends on a number of factors such as distance form the local exchange, the noise on the line, the isp contention ratio, the general level of internet traffic etc.

Nonetheless, even if all other things are ideal, there is also an inherent issue relating to the way data is transmitted over the internet. Because the data is transmitted in packets, each packet contains additional information to enable the modem process it. This additional information is called the DSL overhead. Though this info is essential for reliable data transmission it basically takes from the ‘useful’ data downloaded and thus the DL speed you see will always be less than the advertised line speed.

Have a look here or an explanation of DSL overhead. DSL overheads can cost as much as 15% of the sync speed, therefore on a 3Mbps package a DL speed of around 2.5Mbps is generally considered to be as good as you can get.
