Default New and running slow

Hi Everyone. After years of waiting and eircom's failure I finally got broadband (Smart Telecom) and compared to my creaky old modem it's worlds apart.

That said, I've been looking at some of the speeds you people are achieving on broadband and I think something must be wrong. I understand that despite Smart being uncontended, it can still suffer delays. I'm signed up for its 3Mb service and while not naive enough to assume my speeds would ever hit that - I'm only getting readings of 200+kbps whenever I run the speed test. In reality, my download speed for a file is, on average, 25-34kbps.

Any and all help appreciated

You should definetly be getting better results than that. If you havn't already done so, I would say that the first thing to do is contact Smart support and report the issue so that a line check is done.

Occasionally I have problems with the jack plug on my telephone socket making a bad connection, it might be worth a try checking all your cables and connections.

Sorry that's as much as I can suggest, some of the other members might be able to give more technical help.

Thanks Gordy. On the phone to them now, for the last half an hour. Hopefully, they can help. Will post if they don't

Kensington has posted a link here: http://www.irishisptest.com/forum/sh...6&postcount=13
to a diagnostic tool you can use to check your line.

I'd get onto the smart forum @ http://support.smarttelecom.ie/forums/index.php, and report your issue there, either in a new thread or by contacting any of the admins, who are all smart staff. You'll be waiting forever if you're trying to get through to their support line!

Also, if you wish, see here for an explanation of your line stats.

Good luck!

Default Update

Thanks for the replies. I am at the edge of an exchange, which was why Eircom said they could never supply me with broadband. Despite the lows speeds now, the SmartTelecom BB is relaible - no dropouts yet. That said, is there anything I can do to boost the strength of my line?

Even with no splitters and just the router attached to my phone line, my top download speed is 30Kbps.

Again, any and all help appreciated

M

I'd doubt very much there's anything you can do to boost the signal. If you're too far from the exchange then there's nothing you can do to make the signal any stronger - that's one of the limitations of DSL. You could try experimenting with the various ADSL2 modes - try G.Dmt.Bis (ADSL2) and G.Dmt.BisPlus (ADSL2+) and see if one or the other can connect you any better. Technically, ADSL2+ should handle distance related problems a little better than either ADSL2 or ADSL.
