Default Hi - I see I'm not the only one...

Hi Everyone,

Just joined. Liked the speed test on this site, because I'm having terrible connection problems with my 'new' wireless broadband....!!! Aaaaghh..!!

I'm near Mahon Point Cork, supposedly getting line of site from the airport by Nova Networks, but if it continues as bad as it is then I'll go back to my bluetooth - it was only 9.6kps but it was reliable and didn't keep losing connection.

Anyone out there with the same problem - or solutions - I'd be happy to share ideas and experience.

Cheers,
Pablo Unico

Hi Pablo - Welcome and sorry to hear your troubles. The user davenova is the MD of Nova Networks and usually tries hard to sort out problems. If you post under Irish Isps - Other providers - Nova Networks he should pick it up, maybe PM him to alert him to the post!

Cheers - Gordy.

Hi Gordy,

Thanks for your advice. I will test my laptop from another network connection tomorrow to see if it there is much difference. The other network also uses Nova.

I should mention that last week I was hit by the Zlob Trojan, although I have reinstalled Windows with updates, installed latest AVG plus Firewall and Ewedo AntiSpy, changed browser to Firefox and am running on limited applications (haven't even installed Office again yet).

If there is a stronger connection at this other network point I will call Nova and ask them to come out here and do another signal test.

Still having problems at the moment here downloading anything... My Outlook Express is straining to send and receive...

Thanks again..
Paul

Pablo

Welcome to the board.

Dave from Nova is about the only ISP rep on here who isn't afraid of engaging with clients. If you post about your issue in the correct forum or PM him he should be fairly responsive

Default Much Clearer Now

Hi Michele
and Hi Spud

Thanks for your advice. I tested my laptop on the other connection and it was reasonably ok, so I knew the problem wasn't with my machine.

When I got home though it was slow again. However when I tried much later in the evening it had picked up speed, and now at 11am I am getting download speeds of 250 - 300kbps. This is amazing...!!

I will contact Dave if it drops down considerably again, but I do appreciate there are factors like weather and traffic which can slow down the connection.

So for now I'm a happy bunny.....

I thank you all for your help, and I hope to contribute to this forum in the future. I may even make the MySpeed Test my homepage...!!

Pablo

Default Nova Networks not the only one with customer care

Hi Guys,

Please dont forget that there are other operators here which monitor these boards for info regarding their customers issues. if we see one of our customers posting a problem regarding our network we will try our best to sort it out for them.
This is not a hobby we have, its our business.

Cheers

Default Noticeable Improvement

Hi All,

The update on my previous connection problem......

Since I PM'd Dave (like you all suggested) and he responded, there is a marked increase in my connection speed. It stands out in the MySpeed tests.

Now I'm back into the broadband world. This forum has been an insight, and it's brilliant that an ISP rep is able to deal with queries through it.

I also have a nice clean machine, having had to headwipe it due to Zlob the Trojan, and I intend to keep it that way. If anyone wants any advice on anti-virus, firewalls, and anti-spyware, I have a few notes....!!

Default Trojan Downloaders

Hi Spud,

Hope I can help. First of all find out the name(s) of the trojans that have hit you...

Then find out all you can about them on sites like viruslist.com and kasperskylabs.com, or just do a google search. Learn about the animal you're dealing with. I'm not familiar with Avast Pro...?

Try Skybot too but don't forget these little messy trojans can fool even the best anti-spyware and anti-malware...!!

If it's a real nasty like Zlob, be prepared to backup all your data and list your programs and have setup discs ready to headwipe.

Hope that helps...

Pablo
