Default Broadband and speed issues

Hi I'm Paddy and I've been a member for a short while now. During this time I have been reading through all the issues you guys have with your Broadband services and what has become apparent to me is that every Isp has problems. These problems all seem to relate to speed and i have come to the following conclusions

1. Cable suppliers have problems supplying when the cable is sub-standard and can't support broadband. This is an infastructure problem and simply won't be sorted out until the network owners start investing in their networks.

2. p2p, BT, gaming and Voip will cause problems for all on contended connections they simply use up to much bandwidth so if 15 people on a 38:1 contended connection are using p2p and 10 are using voip the service for everyone using that shared connection is crap. If you leave p2p or bt software on your desktop and it is active everytime you switch on your speed will always be crap

3. Wireless Suppliers will always have problems if they don't invest in BANDWIDTH they will never be able to support Voip, gaming and p2p to any great extent with the current bandwidth they use or indeed even if they treble the bandwidth. The pipes are to narrow. speed will always be an issue with these Isp's. If your only using your connection to browse, send emails and purchase (and I use the word purchase) music and live in an area where not many people will be using wireless then wireless is great as long as your not sharing your connection with someone using p2p etc or on a congested transmitter.

Anyway that's my pennies worth!!

Paddy

Hi Paddyshack

Good assessment, you must have read all the posts on each topic.

I had not thought of the p2p, BT and Voip as significant factors affecting speed.

I guess I've just added a new wish to my list, apart from LLU, I now want ADLS2+ which appears to be an uncontended service

Default bad lines

Bad lines are bad lines nothing will work well over them! don't kid yourself into accepting a quick fix! The real issue is investment in networks and infrustructure until ISPs do this and while we continue to accept it nothing will be done. Even Magnet which is probably one of the more progressive companies is held back due to lack of investment in the encumbants network. Magnets saving grace is fibre which is available in the better apartment blocks.
The main culprit here is the minister for commuication and his inaction to empower comreg to force the unlocking of the LLU and allow this investment to take place. Why is it in a Country like this, when we are so awash with money that all infrustructure is crap?! The roads and the health service are a great visual description of Broadband all choked up (imagine the m50 as bandwidth and the cars as the information trying to get through) because of bad planning and infrustructure.
I'm getting carried away!!!!
